About this deal

Tested in an outdoor open environment without interference. The video transmission latency varies with different goggles. DJI FPV Goggles V2 can achieve video transmission of up to 810p. When you use DJI FPV Goggles V2 with the 810p/120fps video transmission, the lowest video transmission latency is less than 28 ms. DJI Avata is the easiest to fly and most exciting FPV immersive flight experience drone for anyone who ever dreamed of flying like a bird. It gives creators a transformational tool to confidently capture the rapturous feeling of flight, indoors or out. With the birth of DJI Avata, anyone can experience the thrilling experience of moving through the world unbound. The wide-angle lens is free of distortion and generally shows an unobstructed view of the world. However, the airframe can pop into view when you tilt downward at a steep angle or brake. The POV footage itself is quite smooth—a gimbal stabilizes the camera pitch, while digital stabilization provides a real assist. If you're flying high and searching for wide landscapes, you can get a steady look when hovering or flying straight ahead, but the Avata's camera doesn't keep things level and smooth when you start to turn it. For that look, you need to opt for a cinema drone with a three-axis gimbal. The Avata is better for conveying a sense of motion and for FPV effects shots. The USB-C port and microSD slot are in a really awkward spot The new product here – DJI Goggles 2 – is included in the more expensive Pro View bundle, which is what we tested with. The drone also works with the DJI FPV Goggles V2, introduced with the DJI FPV last year, and this is what comes with the Fly Smart combo. Yes, the naming is more than a little confusing! This feature was handy on one of our flying days when the wind was gusty. Without HorizonSteady active, the video was at a severe angle even when flying in a straight line. Both these features can be disabled, but for serious cinematographers aiming to save time in post-production, they’re invaluable.

One complaint I have about the Motion Controller is the position of the Record button. It's on the left side, essentially under where your thumb rests, and reacts to glancing presses. It's very easy to bump while flying. The FPV goggles show a tally icon during recordings, but it's easy to miss when you're concentrating on flying fast and avoiding crashes. The Avata has a setting to automatically record while it's flying, but even with that on, an accidental tap of the Record button ends recording. DJI should offer an option to disable the Record button altogether to prevent recording interruptions. The inclusion of blade rings is also a significant advantage if the drone ever hits living things, even though the 410g Avata is much lighter than the 795g DJI FPV.

Using the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, as we did on many of our flights, is more intuitive for experienced drone pilots. When combined with the excellent view provided by the Goggles 2 and the agility of the Avata, it provided for easy precision flying and a high degree of exhilaration as we cruised low to the ground or between tree tops. In short, flying the Avata is a blast. The sensor here is a significant upgrade over what came before with a 1/1.7in sensor compared to the 1/2.3in on the DJI FPV. The use of inches is somewhat confusing for sensor sizes, but the Avata camera has almost 64% more surface area to capture light, with a 43mm-squared area compared to 28.46mm-squared. If you have small hands, then I’m sure you’re laughing; if you have medium hands, it’s a challenge and if you have large hands, find someone with smaller hands to do it. Likewise, if your eyesight is anything less than 20:20, get someone else to insert the card. Again battery was out, and it was time to test the recording; the first outing with the AVATA had already shown that flying as fast as you can while recording, wearing the goggles and using the motion controller while a lot of fun would burn through the battery at incredible speed.

Compatible with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, which is sold separately, and the DJI Motion Controller. DJI RC Motion 2 currently does not support the DJI Virtual Flight app. The camera features a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor with 48 effective pixels. The lens fronting this sensor offers a 155º field-of-view with a 12.7mm equivalent focal length (actual focal length is 2.3mm). The lens has a large f/2.8 aperture and a focal range of 0.6m to infinity. As the FOV is relatively wide, there is the option to correct the distortion in normal, wide and ultra-wide camera modes. What’s slightly odd about the Goggles 2 is that, in most regards, they are superior to the Goggles V2, but not in every respect. The critical issue here is that this type of flying is a major departure from flying camera drones, and not all pilots will instantly enjoy it. If you discover that FPV flying isn’t for you, then this could be a very expensive mistake. The Avata has a useful amount of internal storage, about 20GB, which is enough to hold around 20 minutes of 4K60 footage. The device's single microSD slot supports cards up to 256GB. Both the card slot and USB-C port (for offloading from internal storage) sit within a propeller guard, though, so you need dextrous fingers to get at them.Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second. The screen refresh rate changes with the video transmission frame rate. It may switch between 100 Hz and 60 Hz to adapt to the current video transmission frame rate.
