The audience may also have seen Prospero as a type of magus - an educated man who studied science and was believed to gain magical powers through their studies. A magus could use their powers for good or might be tempted to use dark magic. Prospero is the main protagonist of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. He is probably the most unusual of Shakespeare’s major characters in that, although he is a human being with human qualities, including human faults, he has magical powers: he has the ability to control the weather, the conditions on the island on which he lives, and also the actions and movements of people and the spirits who also live on the island.

Prospero learns that the king and his followers are feeling guilty and sends Ariel to bring them to him.Another of Prospero’s servants. Caliban, the son of the now-deceased witch Sycorax, acquainted Prospero with the island when Prospero arrived. Caliban believes that the island rightfully belongs to him and has been stolen by Prospero. His speech and behavior is sometimes coarse and brutal, as in his drunken scenes with Stephano and Trinculo (II.ii, IV.i), and sometimes eloquent and sensitive, as in his rebukes of Prospero in Act I, scene ii, and in his description of the eerie beauty of the island in Act III, scene ii (III.ii. 130-138). Leininger also argues that Miranda's sexualisation is a weapon used against her by her father, stating that Prospero uses Caliban's attempted assault and Ferdinand's romantic overtures to marginalise her, simplifying her into a personification of chastity. In Leininger's analysis, Caliban is treated in a similar fashion, forced into the role of an uncivilised savage without heed for his individual needs and desires—much in the same way that Miranda is expected to marry Ferdinand and reject Caliban's advances simply because her father wishes it. [11] King Alonso is stranded on a part of the island with his brother Sebastian, his advisor Gonzalo and Prospero’s brother Antonio. The king is desperately sad as he believes his son, Ferdinand, has drowned in the storm. Ariel plays magical music and Alonso and Gonzalo fall asleep. a b c Shakespeare, William (1913). The Tempest is believed to be the last play Shakespeare wrote alone. [1] [2] [3] In this play there are two candidate soliloquies by Prospero which critics have taken to be Shakespeare's own "retirement speech".

Miranda's upbringing shapes her character and the view of the world around her. She is not confined to social constructs as she did not grow up within a conventional society. This leads Miranda to view the world without preconceived ideas. Prospero is the main guardian in her life, but she developed personality traits such as kind-heartedness that are, as many describe, distinct in comparison to Prospero’s. In addition, she challenged the rules of traditional courtship when she pursued Ferdinand.
