About this deal

In the 19th century, a lavishly decorated Christmas tree became central to the holiday, a tradition originally imported by Nicholas I's wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, from her native Prussia. Boys and girls prepare special songs and verses they take from house to house, entertaining their community in exchange for sweet gifts and tips.

A Ukrainian Christmas by Yaroslav Hrytsak and Nadiyka Gerbish is a lovely short book, with beautiful illustrations. The family comes together to have a dinner which usually includes 12 dishes (the number can vary from 7–17). It was a bit more religious than I was expecting, but it is a book about Christmas, so I gave it 5 stars nevertheless.Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). Traditionally, Orthodox Christmas in Ukraine has started on January 6 and lasted until January 19, which is known as the Feast of Epiphany. In December 2020, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), Metropolitan Epiphanius, said that changing the date of Christmas to 25 December in Ukraine is possible after both the church and the faithful are ready for such a decision, after conducting educational work. In the case of a divine service, its participants are released from the restrictions of fasting on this day. Olha will also be keeping her Ukrainian traditions alive in the UK this year, with lots of wrapped presents under the Christmas tree and time spent with friends and family.

I think it can be summed up by Nadiyka Gerbish’s comment ‘…our current suffering is not in vain, and there is still hope even in the midst of the greatest crisis. I, as a Romanian, was raised Orthodox, but I still found it very interesting because, despite being neighbours, some traditions are different, while others are similar. Other Ukrainian Christmas attributes and traditions, such as gift-giving, Did Moroz's visits and Christmas decorations, lost their religious significance and became associated with New Year's celebrations, which were secular in nature.

In 1929, all religious holidays, including Christmas, were abolished by a decree of the Stalinist regime.
