About this deal

He passes the sheet to a teammate, who does the same with another section of the submarine and continues passing it on until all sections are secured (including all teammates' initials). If there are fewer than four players on a team, some players will need to secure multiple sections. One does not simply perform actions as dictated by the rule book; players must assess the situation and tailor the actions they take according to the ‘board state’. The fact that each role is so dynamic means players must try to keep their cool and make the right decisions at the right time, which turns a game about duelling submarines into a chaotic and hugely thematic event. Playing Captain Sonar He can move the submarine up to four spaces in a straight line without crossing an island or his own route.

It’s rare when you can say a game introduced something truly unique into board gaming, but this does just that. For that alone, Captain Sonar deserves some praise. Player Count and Game Modes

At the start of the game, the captain draws an “X”, showing where his starting position will be, and also hidden from the view of the enemy team. When the Captain activates silence, he announces "ACTIVATING SILENCE" and moves his submarine without announcing the route. Which leaves the problem of player count. You can play this game with two, or four, or six. But something is missing unless you’re in real-time and at the full eight players. The problem is that any more is impossible and any less is less than ideal. After that, the captains of both teams will shout “Dive”, signaling the start of the game. They will both announce the course of their submarines and draw a route on their maps. This is illustrated in the Alpha Map below. Announcing a course A submarine cannot cross or move along its own previous route (i.e. move into a space where a line is already drawn).

Confirm with the Engineer that there are no breakdowns affecting the system. If there are, they must be repaired before the system can be activated. I could go into exactly how each system works but I’m going to give you the abridged version in the form of this handy list: Captain Sonar is a submarine duel pitting two teams of up to four players against one another in fast-paced, real-time gameplay. Separated by cardboard screens, each team divides their submarine’s responsibilities into four unique roles: captain, first mate, engineering and radio operator. Each role is tremendously important, and teamwork is required to successfully discover the opposing submarine and destroy it before the game is through. When all spaces on a gauge are marked, the First Mate announces it loudly and clearly. For example, an announcement of "MINE READY" lets the Captain know that he can drop a mine when he needs it. The Engineer MUST inform the Captain of breakdowns. The Captain will be able to decide to surface when he thinks he is safe and far from the enemy (though only the Radio Operator can guarantee that!). This will allow for uninterrupted repairs and preparation for a new route. When all four symbols on a circuit are crossed out, they repair themselves; the Engineer erases those breakdowns. His First Mate crosses out the two leftmost empty damage spaces on his sheet, then play resumes as normal.

Once the operator has discovered the position of the enemy they can communicate it to the captain and the hunt can start. The aim of the the captain is to damage the enemy submarine by detonating a previously placed mine or by firing a torpedo. The first mate and the engineer are key in this phase as there is nothing more annoying to find the enemy and to be unable to engage it as weapons are disabled or not loaded. Have You Lost Another Submarine, Andrei? The screen is gigantic and cool. The varying play maps are nifty. All the individual stuff you’re drawing on is dry-erase and very functional. Everything gives you the feeling that you are playing something with heft and importance, even if it’s just a bit of inspired chaos. The teammate asks the enemy Captain if the enemy submarine is located in a particular sector. For example, "ARE YOU IN SECTOR 5?" The year is 2048. A new economic war is raging. Rare earth has become a key element in the construction of advanced new machinery, and a major economic force around the world. To avoid drawing outside of the transparent sheet, try to start in the middle of the sheet at the beginning of the game. To beat the enemy, you must cooperate with your teammates. Only the team who best communicates and works together will survive the encounter... The captain is the overall box responsible for controlling the affairs and the other players on the team. From the image above, place the screens in between the players at the center of the table end-to-end. If the route goes outside of the transparent sheet, or if you become lost, erase everything and start over.
