Soon those things take the backseat as the crew hear things they’re not supposed to hear and start having powerful hallucinations as they work to crack the mystery. Mind you, I have never read a Harlequin novel, but if a cheesy romance in space sounds good to you, party on. I found her easy to love and root for, I wanted her to get a happy ending, and I genuinely liked the time that I got to spend inside her head. They're surprised to find that the signal is being sent from the famous luxury liner, Aurora, missing since its maiden voyage more than 20-years ago.

Successful science fiction horror is not easy to pull off and this novel achieves it in some style and has the potential to pick up a wider readership beyond the horror genre. Claire is the captain of a small maintenance repair ship which travels the outer boundaries of known space, where she has spent her entire adult life, with rotating Firefly style motley crews. The story goes back and forth in time, from the current timeline when Claire is in the Verux Tower talking to two of her company superiors, and two months prior, when she was finishing the job with her team. Dead Silence is a 2022 science fiction horror novel by American author Stacey Kade, writing under the penname of S.

Plot was straight-forward, and if there was an expected Big Reveal, Barnes still left an additional trick up her sleeve. I think that had we not diverted from the original ‘crew goes aboard an abandoned vessel and finds terrible things’ plot, I probably would have enjoyed it more, but when we get to the very “Aliens”-esque ‘and now they’re forcing her to go back for their own motives’ plot in the second half, I was a little less enthused. At the intersection of science fiction and horror, Dead Silence is the ultimate haunted house story, in space.

If something is super realistic and could happen to anyone in the real world that is where I get really scared and freak out.

Dead Silence gives you the suffocating claustrophobia of 2001: A Space Odyssey mixed with the horrors of Alien.

They discover the very first space luxury liner, the Aurora, which has been lost for over twenty years. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password.

This novel had all that I could want but it took me a really long time to connect with these characters.

My biggest issue though was the narrator SHOUTING every time the story had emotional or scary dialog! With a compelling haunted-house-in-space frame, excellent worldbuilding, vivid imagery, biting social commentary, sustained tension, and a storytelling style that seamlessly moves between the mortal danger of the present and Kovalik’s unsettling past, this sf-horror blend will resonate loudly with readers. team leader claire kovalik, our unreliable narrator with a tragic backstory, is not looking forward to this transition at all, so when the opportunity to prolong the mission presents itself, she digs in despite the protestations of some of the members of her crew.

This is a novel about space travel, sure, but it’s also about other things: ‘‘Murder, suicide, confusion, and chaos without an explanation or any reason.
