About this deal

The poet explained that he'd been working on writing something in this format for a while - taking inspiration from The Lost Generation by Jonathan Reed - but just couldn't nailed down the topic: To understand the true beauty that underlies Brian Bilston’s poem, a person literally needs to process it twice. First from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top. Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and Jonathan Edwards are others highlighted by Bilston, contemporary poets who “all have that magical blend of poignancy, humour, and accessibility”. It will come as no surprise to his followers that his wider literary tastes show a preference for the dark comedy of Muriel Spark and PG Wodehouse, and the postmodern writing of Flann O’Brien.

This is not really a question as such, more just a place-name followed by a question mark. The same goes for ‘Scotland?’, ‘The North-East?’ and ‘Melbourne?‘. If the question is “Will I be doing any shows in Cornwall (Scotland, the North-East, Melbourne etc)?” then the answer is that I would love to, but I’m all booked up for 2023. Over time, I’d like to read my poems in all sorts of places. Even the Isle of Wight. Diary Entry’ - to help students to ‘Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Make an informed personal response, recognising that other responses to a text are possible and evaluating these.’ Canterbury Christ Church University has partnered with the local charitable organisation Canterbury 4 Ukraine – find out more at https://canterbury4ukraine.org/. As millions of people flee bombing in Ukraine, most media and political comment has been rightly sympathetic. But refugees from other parts of the world, like those escaping war in Syria or violence in Central America, are often described very differently. That scapegoating is turned around in “Refugees,” a 2016 poem by British poet Brian Bilston. It’s a “reverse poem,” meant to be read from the top and then from the bottom—completely changing the framing from suspicion to sharing.I am an educational writer concerned with social justice issues and would like to use this poem as a way to help young people engage with and explore the refugee situation around this year’s Refugee Week which has ‘Welcome’ as its theme. The poem would be used to encourage young people to reflect on stigma and negative stereotypes and to undertake creative writing to formulate a message of welcome for refugees and asylum seekers arriving in the UK. I am working with my own organisation Lifeworlds Learning and with the Humanitarian Education team at British Red Cross to make these materials freely available to schools and educators. Your poem would be part of a wide unit of activities and stimuli. Bilston’s message that has been retweeted over 10,000 times since it was posted last week, is an inspiring act of humanity. The refugee crisis is one of the biggest problems facing the world right now. According to the UNHCR, there are more than 50 million people across the globe who have had to flee their homes. I’m Israeli, and we have a serious problem. The Palestinians (who call the Israelis “The Jews”) are the ones who wish to have a territory that is empty of Israelis (who call the Palestinians “Arabs”). The Israelis wish to have a territory in which they are the majority, thus ruling that area in a democracy. Analysing Subject Matter, Language and Structure’ - to help students to ‘Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.’

Thanks very much for getting in touch – and for choosing my book for your English analysis. Here’s my attempt to answer your questions: Here’s one of those mildly boring updates about when and where I’ll be reading poems over the coming months.
