About this deal

Important notice and declarationBreast milk is best for babies. Professional advice should be followed before using an infant formula. Introducing partial bottle feeding could negatively affect breast feeding. Good maternal nutrition is important for breast feeding and reversing a decision not to breast feed may be difficult. Infant formula should always be used as directed. Proper use of an infant formula is important to the health of the infant. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of feeding. There is a support group for people with tube feeding called Patients on Intravenous and Nasogastric Nutrition Therapy (opens in a new tab) or PINNT. Family members may also join. Wilkes-Holmes, C 2006,' Safe placement of nasogastric tubes in children', Paediatric Nursing , vol.18 issue 9, pp. 14-17

Pour the prescribed amount of water into the syringe and allow to flow through to flush the feeding tube appropriately. If you are reliant on your tube for all your feed, fluids and medications you may have to be admitted to hospital until your tube can be replaced.Flush the syringe and tubing with warm water after use. Clean it with soapy water and let it air dry. Thorough washing with soap and water is often sufficient to sterilize certain infant feeding syringes. Nursing staff may need to titrate the rate/volume of an enteral feed up or down depending on the clinical status, nutritional needs, size and ability to tolerate feeds of the child.

Always use a sterile container to collect the expressed milk. Thaw any frozen milk before drawing it into a syringe. One way to protect yourself from contracting HIV or hepatitis is to use disposable plastic syringes. There is a chance of reusing disposable syringes, but single-shot injections, such as the a/d, automatically break or jam after use, so they cannot. In other words, if you reuse a disposable syringe, you are putting yourself at risk for contracting HIV or hepatitis. If you do not wash your hands before cleaning your syringes, you may be exposed to an infection. How Often Should Enteral Syringes Be Changed? Typically a nurse will measure the length of the tube, lubricate the tip, place the tube in your nose or mouth and advance until the tube is in the stomach. The tube is usually secured to your skin using soft tape. Mimics a normal pattern of eating. Allows for greater mobility/activity as the patient is not tied to the pump for long periods of time. Allows greater flexibility for the patient with regards when the feed is administered. Less equipment required.

You will be regularly reviewed by the dietitian who works out your nutritional needs and selects the most appropriate feed for you. Your dietitian will discuss with you and devise a plan of when to feed and which feed best suits you. Where do I get my feed? Although you may not be eating or drinking it is important to keep your mouth and teeth clean to prevent infection or soreness from a dry mouth. How do I keep my mouth fresh? McClave SA, et al. Randomised trial on gastric residual volume management. Intensive and Critical Care Nursing, 25, pg 258-267 Ensure all medications are prepared separately and are mixed well or thoroughly dissolved in water. Datford and Gravesham, ' Paediatric enteral feeding guidelines & operational policy (infants & children)', Jan 2007, NHS Trust. Make certain that your feeding bag, tubing, and needle and syringe are clean and safe. Both of these should be changed every 24 hours to protect against disease transmission. In essence, a single-use vial is a liquid medication bottle administered to a patient via a needle and syringe. It is critical that you follow these safety guidelines to keep yourself and your patients safe. Reusing Enteral Feeding Syringes Gastrostomy tube - a feeding tube which is inserted endoscopically or surgically through the abdominal wall and directly into the stomach. When you leave hospital you will go home with eight days’ supply of feed and equipment, including the feeding pump if needed. Your dietitian and the nutrition nurse specialists will arrange for further supplies to be delivered to your home by one of three companies. The company used will depend on where you live and where your GP is located, you will be told which company you will use before you go home. Please note: patients who have a history of Liver Failure and known/or suspected oesophageal varices should not have a gastric aspirate removed from the NGT. Instead tube position should be initially confirmed via x-ray with clear documentation of NGT position marker. The medical team should document rationale for not obtaining gastric aspirate in the patient’s progress note as well as an alternative plan to confirm NGT placement. Obtain gastric aspirate The primary responsibility of maintaining proper hygiene while caring for a feeding tube should always be at hand. It is recommended that syringes be thoroughly dried after each use and that they be washed with water (do not boil). It is recommended that you change them every 2-3 days, or more frequently if the needle is visible. Feeding Tube Syringe Hard To Push This guideline aims to support nurses in administering feeds and medications via a nasogastric, orogastric or gastrostomy tube in a safe and appropriate manner. An enteral feeding pump can be used intermittent, bolus or continuous administration of feeds, but is best suited for continuous feeding when tolerance to rate of feeding is an issue.

For older children feeds given as a bolus should be removed from the fridge 15-20 minutes before administration to bring them to room temperature. Feeds given as a bolus may be warmed in an approved bottle warmer. This would be appropriate for all infants and older children who experience discomfort with cooler feeds. Flushing is the single most effective action that prolongs the life of nasogastric tubes. It is recommended that flushing occur BEFORE, DURING and AFTER administration of enteral medications and feeds. A feeding syringe is a type of syringe that is specifically designed for feeding liquids to adults. They are typically made of plastic and have a wide, cylindrical body with a plunger on one end. The other end may have a screw-on cap or a built-in nozzle. Feeding syringes are used to feed liquids to adults who cannot eat or drink on their own. It is imperative that nursing staff caring for children who have enteral tubes in understand why it is in-situ. Attached to pump for long periods of time which may restrict mobility/activity and quality of life. Requires some technical ability. Prolonged presence of a giving set may increase risk of tube displacement.

If it is safe to do so and the child is able to tolerate oral intake consider providing them with a drink and attempt aspirate in 15-30minutes White R., Bradnam V., Handbook of Drug Administration via Enteral Feeding Tubes, Pharmaceutical Press 2007 Adequately flush the enteral tube before, in-between and after medication administration (see above). Enteral feeding pumps can be obtained via CARPS if the ward area does not have its own supply. Infinity pumps are now in use throughout RCH and the giving set can be primed by pushing the fill set button. For further information regarding the use of the infinity pump please see the
