About this deal

Thus encouraged, I proceeded to a second novel, A Breath of French Air, in which the entire Larkin family, new baby and all, set off in the Rolls-Royce for a French holiday, only to suffer certain disillusionments in the matter of French weather, French food (‘We shan’t get very fat on this’) and French sanitary arrangements.

Contents have small, neat name and date to front otherwise clean and unmarked with some age toning to pages. There, late at night, he saw a light burning in a cottage window and it was this that triggered the story.

On rushing to her aid she found that it was nothing of the kind; she was merely reading The Darling Buds of May. In her handsome big black eyes the cloudless blue May sky was reflected, making them dance as she threw out the splendid bank of her bosom, quivering under its salmon jumper.

I don't remember why I put this book on hold and was a little confused when I picked it up from the library. Ma and Pop Larkin's eldest daughter Mariette, is a naughty temptress, who already pregnant by persons unknown is trying to lure young Charlton 'Charlie' down the path to fleshly wickedness, and he seems unable to resist. This is the first volume of the Larkin series with a cast of carefree rustics (maybe they are not really rustics, perhaps they are crooks) who do exactly what they want, get their money (in large quantities) from doing nothing (or worse) and, whatever they do, seem to land on their feet. First edition hard back publisher's original pictorial matt laminated covers, gilt stamping to spine.

Later they were published in book form as The Greatest People in the World and Other Stories and How Sleep the Brave and Other Stories. It’s the kind of novella you can polish off in a sitting or two, and The Novel Cure prescribes it as a tonic for cynicism. His voice choked itself back, however, and in reality the sound came from a drove of fifteen young turkeys winding down from the strip of wood land. The Darling Buds of May is the first book in the Pop Larkin Chronicles, a series of five books that joyfully tell the stories of the Larkins. But who picks fruit these days and are they having nearly as much fun as we chosen few did, the Mariettes and Ma Larkins, the Charlies and tiny Aunt Fans, the multitude of kids who stuffed their gobs with the succulent, juicy strawberries until their lips, tongues and cheeks were as red as the fruit itself - like I did some 40 years ago?

Note; this is an original article separated from the magazine, not a reprint or copy, and does NOT have a title page or cover.E. Bates books and followed the adventures of Pop and his family set against the idyllic backdrop of Kent. Best read in the midst of winter to remind you that golden summers and autumns will indeed come round again. Like the original Darling Buds of May TV series, The Larkins will also be based on the popular novels by H. Three novellas in one book: The Darling Buds of May, a Breath of French Air, and When the Green Woods Laugh.
