About this deal

I’d recommend using a separate Camera such as the 122 or 222 on the rear windscreen. You will need a separate power supply and SD card as it will not connect to your XXX, but can be used as a Camera facing rearwards. The prices are comparable with the Series 2 Rear Cams, and if you’d like to keep using your XXX, is the most viable option. Impressively, Parking Mode is available on all the Series 2 Nextbase dash cams (122-522GW). If you're wondering where the 622GW is in the new range, it doesn't yet exist - so there's no 4K Series 2 dash cam. Not yet anyway, but we've heard that it's on the cards... Looping length can be set at two, three or five minutes. There’s a time-lapse option with durations of three minutes or two hours between frames, which are rather strange choices. It might have been useful to have a few options in-between. You can turn on a parking mode, where the 512GW will sit in standby mode and record two minutes of video every time it detects physical movement. Please remember that after this test your Dash Cam will once again need charging as the battery will be flat. Only dash cam to have innovative polarising filter to completely remove windscreen glare and reflections.

Remove the 2 small cross head screws from the magnetic mount / gps holder -not sure if this was necessary but I did it anyway to gain better access

So the 512GWRC has now no longer in production or sold by us. Regarding Rear Cameras there are 2 options: Gently prise up the circuit board, it should unclip from the front housing (some small plastic lugs). This gives access to the battery inside the front housing. I've fixed mobile phones and gopro cameras before so I have some skill in this area but I don't want to attempt the impossible.

the issues with the 512GW and the Rear Add-on resolved? All the issues with the 512GW and the Rear Add-on resolved?

The image quality of the 512GW is good in all kinds of different conditions including bright sunlight, rain and darkness. It’s easy to make out details like signs, the makes and models of cars, along with number plates. The field of view is 140 degrees, which is wide enough to capture a broad area ahead of the car. Considering most people use dash cameras to protect themselves against false insurance claims or in the event of an accident, Nextbase has also renewed it's partnership with SureThing!, offering those who buy a Series 2 dash cam 25% off a policy with the insurer - which is an increase on the previous 20% discount. There’s a photo mode as well, which you can select instead of video mode. This captures images at a resolution of only 1920 x 1080. You can take pictures with the Record/OK button on the right-hand side of the screen. This could be a useful feature if you need to take some shots of damage at the scene of an accident, although the images aren’t very high resolution. Nextbase 512GW – Optional safety featuresThe Hi and Lo resolution files improve the speed of the Wi-Fi transfer, if you do not ever use this feature we're working on a setting to turn this off. Gone is the big clunky mount of the 512GW. Replacing it is a mount that connects straight into the body of the camera using a magnetic attachment. It's very smart. The charging cable also plugs directly into the camera or the mount - there's the option for both.

However, taking the 25% SureThing! insurance discount into account, and the fact that many insurers now want GPS, time and speed stamping on submitted footage - the 522GW is a very smart option. Its been working fine until recently, but the battery is now refusing to charge up to any usable level - even from a mains charger. Alternatively, it’s possible to record Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 60fps. You can also choose Full HD and 720p at 30fps. At the top resolution, video is captured at 27Mbits/sec, so a 16GB memory card will be enough for 77 minutes of footage before the recoding loops to replace the oldest files with new ones. As usual, there’s microSD for storage, but none is supplied in the box – which is a shame for a dash cam that is well out of the budget territory. Given that the battery does seem to sometimes fail prematurely, maybe the next range of cameras can have a user replaceable battery, or maybe just a capacitor across the range, whenever they may be.The neodymium magnetic attachment is exceptionally strong, too, so your dash cam should never detach from the windscreen and none of the footage we captured is shaky. The magnetic mount attachment also makes clipping the dash cam onto the mount much less fiddly than before. The mount includes a mini-USB connector that you can attach to the long car power cable. Unfortunately, this has a non-removable car cigarette light adapter at the other end, so you won’t easily be able to hook up the 512GW and a satnav to automotive power – unless your car has a USB connection and the satnav can make use of this.

Nextbase dash cams are readily available from Halfords and are allegedly endorsed by the AA, so it’s no surprise that the specification and build make for a promising start. The sensor inside is a Sony Exmor R unit, although there’s no indication of the size or resolution. There are at least sufficient pixels for 1440p recording (2560 x 1440) at 30fps. Remove the 4 small cross-head screws from the corners of the circuit board (keep separately from the above screws, they are different.) It’s best to remove the microSD card and use a card reader on your PC or Mac. You can drag and drop the files, or use Nextbase’s Replay 3 program. This allows you to see the video along with all the other recorded GPS and G-sensor data, plus your location on the map. It works well, and can provide extra evidence, if needed, about a collision. VerdictYes that obviously works - do you ever upload footage to any other device? I do regularly, so probably that's why the problem bugs me more than you. I also use the 512 in another vehicle, although not the rear camera that stays permanently in my vehicle. That's a good point Sam re false positives. I had previously turned mine off; potholes, speedbumps, etc trigger protection. It won’t allow your battery to run flat, as it will turn off if it detects a certain voltage. Nextbase says it uses so little power in sleep mode that it will work even if you leave you car parked for several weeks. Nextbase 512GW: Performance
