The action of coconut oil was tested in its natural state and after being treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion. The oils were tested against strains of Streptococcus bacteria, which are common inhabitants of your mouth. In today’s world, self-reliance is no longer a luxury, a “cute hobby,” it’s a necessity. Join us inside The Society of Self-Reliance and empower yourself with the skills you need to thrive in the new world! I like the idea of some of the ingredients BUT, the only reason we need to brush our teeth is because we no longer chew food. As a species, we used to have larger, straight teeth without cavities because we had larger jaws (more bone). This is achieved by chewing meats and fibers, beginning in very young childhood, before teeth even erupt. Of course, breast feeding is the best developer of strong bones, and muscles of the face. Like all species, we used to chew our food. We did not have smoothies, bananas, avocados, soft bread, soft french fries, fancy waters, the softest meats and cheeses. We actually had to rip and tear and subsequently had strong jaws, straight teeth and no cavities. You don’t need to brush, you just need to chew. Oh, and also to nasal breath. If you haven’t read Breath, by James Nestor, do yourselves a healthy favour and read this book and then pass on the message to the planet. We can literally shut down the dental industry and all have healthy mouths and teeth. ReplyI would much rather use toothpaste that is perfectly safe for my entire body, inside and out. This is especially true when looking into toothpaste for my kids to use. I love this as a remineralizing toothpaste for toddlers since it is so safe and natural. Pin it for later You’ll also learn how to grow and craft your own herbal medicine, detox your home, become your own handyman, and so much more (because self-reliance is about more than just the food that we eat… But that’s a pretty good place to start!)

Organic, virgin coconut oil is great for oral health. Some people have even used it with oil pulling to heal cavities ( source)! Melt the coconut oil and shea butter together over low heat. Stir in the baking soda, corn starch/arrowroot and essential oils and pour into a small jar with a lid. You'll be amazed at how well this solidifies. I apply it with my fingers but it would be super easy to use as a bar as well.Baking soda could be used on its own as a toothpaste if you could stand the powdery texture and slightly salty taste. Like coconut oil, it’s also renowned as a whitener and has even been used in well-known commercial brands of toothpaste due to its natural whitening properties. Whether you’re looking for ways to save money or wanting to switch to natural products, coconut oil is an ingredient you want to have on hand for making homemade personal care products. It’s the main component in my homemade deodorant, face wash, hair mask, sugar scrubs and homemade body butter.

Once I started experimenting with a homemade toothpaste recipe, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how few ingredients I actually needed. My recipe has 4 ingredients, with an optional 5th if you add in activated charcoal. Not only is this recipe simple, it contains only plant based ingredients that are common. No weird chemical compounds or additives here! Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including: breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls, and undescended testicles in boys. Stevia. If you want tooth-friendly sweetness, stevia is a good choice. Choose powdered extract, powdered stevia leaf, or a plain or flavored liquid stevia extract. Brushing — the mechanical process — is the No. 1 way to protect your teeth from decay. It’s far more important than toothpaste, mouthwash or any other product! You may be surprised to learn that you can brush your teeth without any toothpaste at all. Just give all the surfaces of your teeth (plus your tongue and all the other surfaces inside your mouth) a good rubbing with a soft-bristled toothbrush. This “dry brushing” is a great way to brush when you’re away from home or between meals. Here is a super simple recipe for toothpaste using ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Basic DIY Toothpaste Recipe I use a very small amount of baking soda because it is helpful in cleansing. I don’t use a lot because too much can be harsh.
