About this deal

Electric coolboxes use the 12v power from your car to keep things cool. If you’re heading away for a longer journey, perhaps for anything from a few days to a few weeks, then these devices are perfect for you - and larger capacity electric coolboxes are better suited to longer trips. To maintain the efficiency and preventing the diodes destroying themselves a cooling fan cools the hot side, and another fan ( some designs use a single motor with fans at each end of the shaft) blows the cool air around the interior of the fridge. The advantage is that the fridge will work in any attitude , provided the air vents are not obstructed. No gas or liquid is involved. However, if you’re only off for a picnic or a few days of camping, then a standard coolbox should be perfect. Ultimately, cool boxes can make for an excellent addition to your arsenal of camping equipment, and could well make your shopping list when you’re identifying the camping essentials. Why shop at Halfords? Is it a compressor type fridge as unsure about term "Thermoelectric" as we would also like to use it at home as a fridge to store bottles. where it would be plugged into mains? If not I guess we will need to look for a mini fridge at home.

Raise a toast to the cool bag. These cool camping accessories keep food and drink ice-cold whatever the weather is doing outside. Store your beer, burgers or butter in one of these beauties and you’ll be a happy camper. We used to buy in small display fridges ( for conversion into environmental test chambers ) for less than the cost of a spare compressor! The thing with the compressor is that it cycles on and off only when needed, the lads have a 30Ltr ? Thermo electric one for their tinnies and when run side by side at high ambient temps the Thermo runs constantly for hours at an end, sometimes all day, till the early hour of the morning, unlike the compressor cycling on and off. The fridge will be plugged into the batts all the time on the journey and when the engine is off run off the batteries so no messing about disconnecting etc.

On small compressor fridges, its not worth repairing them, due to the cost of gas, parts and technicians time. He takes it in the car when going camping in a tent, as he will do next week as he and his son re doing the Scottish 500 and mountain biking in various places. It's a compressor, fully adjustable temperature , will freeze things and is remarkably quiet and economical to run. We've not used the data capture gear on them yet to monitor the current used and temperature when used side by side.

Yes that's the big down side with thermoelectric. I did a lot of development work using them on small environmental chambers as an alternative to compressor cooling systems and it involved lots of calcs and data collecting for durability and efficiency,( and yes I destroyed quite a few pushing them too far), particularly as the refrigeration industry was being forced away from CFC's and to repair compressor based systems requires a specialist engineers and kit( different for each gas used). Ironically a lot of commercial cooling systems now use high pressure CO2 as the refrigerant , At Halfords, we’ve got coolboxes and cool bags perfect for outdoor adventures. Our standard coolboxes use freezer boards to keep food and drink fresh. They aren’t the only cool box option though. Electric coolboxes
