About this deal

While the Lomo'Instant Wide can produce breath-taking images and enable the user to get as artistic as their creativity allows, it is also quite expensive. For many, the retro design, creative features, and picture quality will be enough to justify the price tag, and if we hadn't had so much trouble with the printing process, we'd completely agree. However, having access to printed photos in seconds is the main draw of instant cameras, and this one struggled to provide that. Also, the fact that this camera uses replaceable batteries, which are not included, means that the cost will continue to grow with its use. One saving grace is that the film for this camera is on the more affordable end, but this too will add up the more you use it. Conclusion Shooting Modes: Shoot photos with auto-flash on, or take direct control with manual shooting modes (with flash and without flash).

As is very often the case with Lomo products, the best way to describe the results from the Lomo'Instant Square is “mixed”. In other words, with a camera like this, you can’t, and shouldn’t, expect to get perfect results with every shot - which some people will argue is all part of the Lomo charm. When using the close-up lens, focusing is a little hit and miss. Even though it promises to be able to focus as close as 10cm, I struggled to replicate this in the field - it may be something which you need to practice more to get the desired effect. The Automat offers full automatic exposure. Its ambient light meter does a great job nailing exposure with consistency, and you can choose whether or not to fire the flash for a shot. Full manual controls aren't available, but there is a Bulb shutter setting, which keeps the shutter open as long as you hold the release down. The fact that you can add on lenses to the front of the Lomo'Instant Automat also gives it wider appeal than a standard camera - although the close-up lens doesn’t seem to produce the results we would expect from it. If you have an artistic flair, try Lomo’s latest camera [the Lomo’Instant Automat] on for size. This Instax Mini-compatible cam is great on its own, taking sharp shots and including features many Fuji-made cameras omit. The viewfinder has two distinct levels of brightness. Ignore the darker vignette area—it's not going to show up in your image. The bright square is your frame, but you have to remember that framing is not going to be precise. The viewfinder is offset from the lens, and that difference means the framing is going to vary a bit, especially when focusing close.

Lomography sells updated versions of vintage cameras which makes this style more accessible to newcomers. Lomo has come to be a term that’s generally used for vintage cameras, budget cameras, toy cameras, and even your old instant camera. The Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 is a bulky beast. It has a 114-mm, f/14 lens and uses only Instax Wide film for a picture that's ideal for capturing landscapes or groups of people. While the camera has a digital readout, it has fewer controls than the Mini 90. Lomography film comes in 110, 120, and 35mm formats and uses a unique chemical formula to create stunning effects. This film can be used with corresponding cameras from any brand. You can even get some great results by using Lomography brand film with professional film cameras!

The lens can also shoot at f/22. Exposure control is automatic, so it'll only stop down that far in very bright light. Instax film is rated at ISO 800, and the shutter can fire from 8 seconds through 1/250-second, or in a long-exposure manual Bulb mode up to 30 seconds. Multiple exposure support is also included, expanding creative options. Exposure Compensation is available, a big help for situations where the ambient light may not match the light cast on your subject. The diminutive 1.8- x 2.4-inch Instax Mini prints (costing about 75 cents each) generally achieve a good balance in both color saturation and brightness, and the fill-flash lit faces in outdoor shots pretty well. Colors were just a tad muted compared to some Kodak camera images using its Zink printing tech. Unlike all-analog models (such as the instax mini), the Evo captures digital images that you can preview on the generous 3-inch and slightly tweak — orientation, brightness, and color vividness (with a dreamy "natural" option) — before committing to a print. Fujifilm's mobile app doesn't allow much control of settings, but can send smartphone images to the camera's printer. (Going the other way, you can transfer the Evo's digital images to a computer using the camera's microSD card slot.) Pictures from the Lomo Instant Glass Magellan were incredibly sharp. Its size made it convenient to carry around, and it performs well in low-light; it did not even require a lighten mode to take some night shots in the yellow streetlamp of a park. Lomography sells several versions of the Lomo’Instant Automat, some of which include add-on lenses, such as a "Splitzer" gizmo that divides the frame into different sectors, and a lens for shooting extreme close-ups, up to a foot from your subject. Various aspects of the Lomo Instant can be altered by using the controls on the front of the camera. You can alter the focus range, allowing you to switch from 0.4-0.9 metres to 1 metre to infinity. If you attach one of the lens filters, you will need to change this depending on which attachment you’re using (a full set of instructions comes in the box).

In the bottom of the Lomo'Instant Square camera, you’ll see there’s a remote control which can be removed to use for shots from a distance. It accepts a coin-type battery (DL2032). If you don’t want to use the remote control, you can just leave this attached to the camera base and forget about it, but it’s useful to have for group shots and the like. The remote control has two buttons, one which will just take a shot, and one which will set off the 10 second self-timer. The Mini 90 has an electronic macro setting for more creative shots, as well as two shutter buttons to make it easier to snap portraits or landscape photos. Unlike with some other instant cams, you can turn the Mini 90's flash on or off. Motor-driven 2-range switching (0.9 m - 3 m / 3m - infinity) Normal Mode (0.9 m - 3 m) Landscape Mode (3m - infinity)Other instant cameras use Zink paper, which uses heat to activate colors in the paper. The advantage to Zink is that you don’t have to worry about accidentally exposing the paper to light, as you do with Instax film. However, we’ve found that Zink prints tended to be less vibrant overall. The 60mm f/8 plastic lens might sound a little odd if you’re used to the latest Sony or Canon lens, but that’s music to the ears of any lomo fan. p>Using a Lomo instant camera in combination with Instax film is probably about as simple as it gets when it comes to analogue photography. I’ll be looking at cameras both from the lomography band brand as well as community favorites from the vintage and toy categories. 1. LomoApparat 21 mm Wide-angle Camera

Most of the time, the shots produced are nice enough - there is a certain degree of unpredictability, but you’re always going to get that with instant cameras, and it will be that which appeals to many users. Jumping into Lomography might seem challenging, especially if your mainstay is digital photography. The Lomo’Instant Automat gives you sharper images, better low-light performance and a wider field of view than its competitors. There are a couple of different camera ways you can buy the Lomo'Instant Automat in - we were supplied with the “South Beach” edition to us for our review, which is a burgundy and cream design. You may draw some attention when using a camera like this.Portraits have an evocative quality — clear, with soft flesh tones — while landscapes provided pinpoint detail and pleasing colors, similar those from the Lomo'Instant Automat. Night shots, with and without flash, and augmented with available streetlights, can make a storyteller out of any casual shooter. Lomo has carved out a good niche within the photographic community, providing fun and quirky cameras which are charming if not particularly precise or accurate. It’s also true that the small size of the Instax films makes this more of a novelty camera than anything else - how much money (and time) you want to expend on a novelty is likely to be up to you.
