About this deal

The dry woody element gradually appears, bringing a sense of cedarwood and lingering toasted oak and tannins. The maple flavor takes a cinnamony hint in the aftertaste, keeping it sweet enough to balance the toasted wood in the mid-palate. There’s a surprisingly fresh finish, with juicy orange hints bringing a somehow almost medicinal quality to the taste. How to drink The Old Forester bourbon? The nose is sweet but more caramel and fruity. It has a hint of the cherry nose I’m used to with Old Forester. But, this is much warmer and rounded. It’s spicy with notes of cinnamon and minty. The taste is where this one becomes impressive. It’s viscous and syrupy. It’s sweet and spicy. There’s a caramel apple or dark cherry note. The finish is more leathery and woody. It blends to oakiness towards the end. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. After initial maturation in new oak barrels, Old Forester 1910 is dumped in heavily charred, lightly toasted barrels for second maturation, which is quite noticeable in tasting notes. Old Forester is one of the oldest whisky houses in America (yes, they spell whisky without the “e”). The brand has been on the shelves for over 150 consecutive years. It’s also the first brand of whisky to be sold on the open market in sealed bottles (prior to this innovation, whisky was often just sold out of barrels at grocery stores). Carbon copy of the aroma with a slight addition of some grainy/farmy notes peeking through towards the end. Oak, caramel, roasted nuts, vanilla pudding, copper, corn bread, honey, dried dark fruit and some baking spice. This opens with a rush of fresh wildflowers next to bold citrus notes, especially grapefruit and orange oils with a dash of lemon zest in the mix. The taste takes that lemon and layers it into a very vanilla and butter-forward shortbread with a dusting of raw sugar that leads towards an eggnog spice mix. That spiciness drives the finish as a hint of cherry and lemon mingle on the warm and fairly long end. We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets.Old Forester 1920 boasts a higher alcohol proof making it bolder, richer, and more flavorful than Old Forester 1910. Long -> Oak, cocoa, baking spice, dried dark fruit and copper fades dryly to a grainy/farmy quality. Every year, Old Forester releases their most anticipated whisky, Birthday Bourbon. This year’s release was a 12-year-old blend created from 119 barrels of the good stuff.

Moist, dark chocolate cake with cloves and oak mix with a flourish of vanilla on the nose. The taste holds onto the spice and amps it into Christmas spice territory with a focus on woody cinnamon next to worn leather and buttery toffee. A dry floral note arrives late with a burst of orange that leans creamy (almost like a sherbert) comingling with all that vanilla and toffee.

Price comparison

In each of these categories, Old Forester has a contender among its broad range of bourbons. Though the annual release of the Birthday Bourbon expression inevitably results in disappointment for many hopeful sweepstakes entrants (this writer included), there’s plenty of Old Forester around, much of it achieving a level of price-adjusted quality that deserves a classification of “very good” or better. This is a perfectly suitable entry-point whisky. It’s great for mixing but needs a fair bit of ice to work as a sipper. And that’s why we’re starting this ranking with it. Old Forestes knows this is a mixing bourbon, so let’s treat it like that. 13. Old Forester Rye Whisky Brown-Forman Old Forester’s 86 Proof is a very straightforward whisky. The mash bill is mid-range rye with 18 percent next to 72 percent corn and a final ten percent malted barley (the same bill for all their bourbon). The juice is aged in a fairly heavily charred oak barrel for an undisclosed amount of time (the youngest barrel is likely older than four years). The whisky is then blended and proofed down to a very manageable 86 proof. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

The Brown-Forman distillery also uses the same mash bill for their premium, high-end market bourbon, Woodford Reserve. Admittedly, the barrel seasoning makes all the difference between the two products. It is a high-rye recipe that contains a higher rye content than most bourbons. Despite its generous helping of rye, the Old Forester bourbon does not taste like Rye whiskey. The Old Forester 1920 features a green tag on top of the bottle, the founder’s signature, and its alcohol-proof. During prohibition, the Old Forester distillery was allowed to stay open and make medicinal whiskey. During this time they barreled at 100 proof making the end result, post-angel’s share, around 115 proof. This is their homage to the whiskey they made during prohibition. All of this is to say, Old Forester has been putting out a lot of great whisky for a mighty long while now. So we’re ranking all their standard and limited release bottles— 14 expressions, judged on taste alone. Old Forester 1920 Prohibition style bourbon is easily my favorite expression of the Whiskey Row Series. I’ve been a fan of Old Forester Signature, and 1920 Prohibition Style bourbon is has a similar flavor profile but much stronger. If I had one minor gripe, it would be that this expression likely started as normal barrels of Old Forester distillate, with a barrel entry proof of 125. If Brown-Forman really wanted to make an interesting bourbon, barreling some bourbon at 100 proof for a future release would be a more accurate reflection of a prohibition style whiskey.Finish: Tart apple, long smoky finish, toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and satisfying heat Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky Old Forester is known as the first bottled bourbon, and two of the expressions from their Row Series have gathered so much attention for being great-tasting whiskeys. The Old Forester 1920 and 1910 used a similar mash bill ratio: 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. My Malt colleague Matt Kusek once argued that you should never buy whiskey as a present for a whiskey lover. He reasoned that, for a serious enthusiast, all the whiskey that was desirable but unobtainable to them would also be unobtainable for the prospective gift giver. While I’d agree with “Kusek’s Law” in a general sense, I’d add this important exception to the rule: if you are going to buy a bottle of bourbon to gift to a whiskey lover, make it 1920. Your ability to find these bottles or their price doesn’t play into this ranking at all. Moreover, this is based largely on tasting 2021 versions of these bottles over the past six-ish months — so if you have a bottle that’s been cellared for 20 years, we can’t speak to that (although… fun!).

is lighter than 1920. Since Old Forester undergoes second barrelling, it is sweeter and lighter than the latter. It is like a dessert on a glass with little warmth. This line of bourbon is a stone-cold classic. Their 100-proof expression is made in the same way as their 86 proof. The key difference is after these barrels are blended, they’re barely touched with water, keeping the proof very hearty. Palate: On the front palate, a very brief berry note leads off the front and the flavor transitions to caramel and toasted nut notes. In the mid-palate, the caramel note drops off and seasoned oak and caramelized sugar lead into a light cream and seasoned oak finish. Final Thoughts and Score/Buy A Bottle: Score: 88/100

On the nose: Brandied cherries, but also something more serious. I need to really concentrate on this one (which I like) to tease out the individual aromatic nuances. There’s a touch of dried firewood that slowly expands to encompass ground cinnamon, tarragon, and thyme. There’s a momentary whiff of latex that makes me feel slightly quizzical, though this recedes soon enough, returning my focus to those ample, concentrated cherry notes. In total, this gives the sense of being very rich. The brand recipe combines the signature mash bill and a 1B proprietary yeast strain with roughly 20% sour mash.
