About this deal

I shall skip straight to the cancel button first because this is the most important button on any toaster. It’s the button that saves the day when you’re an overnight guest at someone else’s house and you’re in the kitchen in the morning making some toast when smoke starts pouring out of every orifice and, in a blind panic, you stab at every button you can see in a vain attempt to prevent setting off every smoke alarm in the building. Since you’re completely unfamiliar with the toaster in question, you’d rather not simply lift the toast lever in case you break a mechanism, so you reach for the only saviour you can see – the mains plug. I toasted one slice of white bread vertically and one horizontally to test evenness, on a middling browning setting of 3.

Toast took 2 minutes 40 seconds and was cooked perfectly, very even. The vertical slice was great too, with less than 1cm at the top only slightly underdone. Toast texture was perfect: crisp on the outside but not dried out Sage, a subsidiary of Breville, specialises in high-end kitchen gear that is both well designed and exceedingly reliable. I know this because I’ve tested quite a few of its products in the past and not one of them has ever disappointed. Yes, Sage gear is a bit more expensive to buy – think Dualit and KitchenAid league – but you absolutely get your money’s worth in build quality, design and intuitiveness. You won’t find a Sage product in any colour other than brushed stainless steel and that’s the case with this tasty toaster which has a lovely silvery finish that doesn’t attract fingerprints. While it does seem like a steep price to pay, The Smart Toast's quality, reliability and impressive capabilities mean it should probably save you more money in the long-run. SAGE SMART TOAST REVIEW: DESIGN AND BUILD

The beep at the end of the toasting cycle is handy but it happens at the exact same time as the toast popping up, so the sound is masked. It would be better if it beeped a second earlier or later.

Again crumpets were very well cooked, a sense of crispness on the outside but softness inside. Impressive. Above this are four buttons: A Bit More, Crumpet/Fruit Loaf that promises extra heat to the middle elements, Frozen, Cancel. There’s no button for reheating toast.

The brushed steel finish is pleasantly impervious to fingerprints and a good, wide crumb tray comes out of left-hand side. The outside walls remain very cool after toasting. I’ll keep this chapter relatively short because everything was pretty much a great success with this toaster. First and foremost, it toasted everything very evenly across the slice, though the inner heating elements do seem to be a bit hotter because one side of the bread was a little more browned than the other. Nevertheless, I call that a bonus because it gave me a choice of which side to butter. We understand that different breads need different toasting times for your ideal shade. The intuitive presets of this kitchen appliance allow you to toast your favourite bread types, whether its ordinary white bread or artisan bread, with variable browning control for more precise toasting.

The best two-slot toaster we’ve tested is the KitchenAid Artisan, but it’s very pricey. If you’re open to the idea of a four-slot toaster than the Dualit and Hotpoint are our favourites, or maybe the Morphy Richards Rose Gold Toaster if you’re on a budget. Verdict The Sage BTA730UK the 'A Bit More' Toaster 4 Slice is a must-have appliance for breakfast enthusiasts who appreciate their toast just the way they like it. With its contemporary stainless-steel finish, this toaster not only adds a touch of elegance to your kitchen but also ensures durability and easy maintenance. Boasting a 4-slice capacity, it's perfect for family breakfasts or gatherings. Perhaps the more exciting features (and what you’re paying for) are the five auto features designed to make toasting a breeze. The buttons are self-explanatory, so you won’t have to decipher complicated symbols.

The second button in line is for toasting crumpets, fruit loaf and hot cross buns, and it does this by providing more heat energy to the inner elements. Simply place the crumpet or bun with its inside facing inwards – as per the markings etched on the divider in dirty great typeface – and it will toast the inner side of the crumpet more than the outer crusty side. This is a great thing since toasting buns and crumpets can often result in the drier crusty side toasting too much. Finally, the third button from the left is for toasting frozen bread and it does what it says on the tin – pop in a frozen slice and it will gently warm it up before toasting it. I tried a bagel using the Crumpet/Fruit Loaf button too, immediately after the crumpet. They were definitely cooked on one side only, but overdone. The Sage doesn’t take temperature into account and reduce cooking times for consistent results. Also because the toast isn’t ejected very high when done, it sits there beside the still-hot elements and continues to brown if you don’t remove it promptly.

This is a decent toaster that boasts some clever features. But there are other toasters like the Dualit 4 Slot Lite and Hotpoint TT 44E UP0 with built-in intelligence that perform even better by reducing toasting time if the toaster is already hot. The Sage Smart Toast looks simple yet sophisticated with its solid brushed stainless steel design. Unlike other humongous, premium toasters, it's reasonably light and doesn’t take up heaps of kitchen counter space.
