About this deal

The atmosphere is nice, interesting, with a good mystery at the center of it all. We follow a lot of characters, more than I am used to, with whole passages about their past and how they ended up in this space hotel. I can't say I was really attached to any of them, but I can't say either that I didn't care about them. Carl was one of the character I felt the most about, with Rogan.

Like Frontier, this book is heavily character driven. We meet a new character each chapter, dipping into their world and their story. While it was the main character’s journey that helped string the previous book’s chapters together, in this book it is the hotel, Abeona. Each chapter gives insights not only into the characters, but the hotel. You could argue the hotel is the main character.I'd love to see another book in this world. The ending could certainly allow for it should the author so wish. I'm unsure if they've plans to continue with it, but I would definitely read it should they decide to. Throughout the story, there is a mystery about a dissident troublemaker who is a stowaway on the ship who

I would probably rate this a mere three stars were it not for the novel story-telling technique. I'm a Neophile, so I'm always intrigued to see something in a book that I haven't seen before. If you prefer the tried-and-true, you may not like Floating Hotel as much as I did. This Sci-Fi book is very much a dystopian type, with ecosystems in collapse. The landscapes are obviously desolate, with a lawlessness in many areas, but some that are ruled by ruthless Sheriffs or law enforcement. My favorite part of Frontier has to come down to either the world-building or the protagonist’s dedication to her lover. Both are written so compellingly that it is impossible for me to choose a single favorite element! I will be thinking about Frontier for years to come, and it will always hold a special place on my bookshelf. This book was such a fun and comforting read. It's rare that a book with so many different points of view can make you feel so emotional and curious about each of the characters' fates, but this one manages it!

If I have one problem with this book, it's that I wanted more of it. I loved the build up throughout and the tension as you get to know each of the characters at the hotel, but the ending itself felt somewhat rushed. I'd love to have seen a few more clues about the end before I reached it, and now I really want to find out what happens next to all the hotel staff! Moreover, the structure of the story is cleverly done. We follow our main character, The Stranger, through the eyes of those she encounters on her journey. This narrative style allows us to understand the character of The Stranger in a way that we would otherwise not be able to. Through the many different characters we meet, we see every aspect of her character - her dangerousness, her compassion, and her turmoil. The narrative style also builds up an immense level of suspense, making the book unputdownable. Curtis slowly reveals The Stranger to us as she parcels out information in small chunks, never giving away too much all at once. This makes for a truly addictive read. The book opens with Carl Kravitz, a stowaway, being offered a job abroad the Grand Abeona Hotel, a floating hotel housed in a spaceship that travels the stars. Many years in the future we are introduced to the ragtag crew of the Abeona, a found family full of misfits, former criminals, and those looking for answers to life’s bigger questions. As the story progresses, we understand that there is much more going on in this hotel than meets the eye. The Problem Solver’s conference has introduced a cryptic new puzzle. There are some mystery guests that might just be spies for the Empire. There is a mysterious anti-imperial writer who is sending out notes against the Emperor and might have a connection to the ship. The synopsis reads: “In the distant future, climate change has reduced Earth to a hard-scrabble wasteland. Folk are as diverse and divided as they’ve ever been – except in their shared suspicions when a stranger comes to town. One night a ship falls from the sky, bringing the planet’s first visitor in three hundred years. She’s armed, she’s scared... and she’s looking for someone.” At the centre of these mysteries stands Carl, one time stowaway, longtime manager, devoted caretaker to the hotel. It's the love of his life and the only place he's ever called home. But as forces beyond Carl's comprehension converge on the Abeona, he has to face one final question: when is it time to let go? All in all, I very much enjoyed reading Floating Hotel and if you’re looking for a cozy yet thrilling read all set in a hotel floating in space - then make sure to give this book a go.

The dystopian world is Earth, populated by the religious fanatics who decided to stay on the devastated near-dead planet when everyone else was evacuated. They wanted to remain close to the Earth God Gaia, and saw space flight as a sin. As I finished Floating Hotel, I found myself happy to have read it, but with the wish that it had been three books; a cozy slice of life aboard a spaceship, a mystery novel, and a space exploration epic. Hodder & Stoughton has signed two books by games journalist Grace Curtis, including her début Frontier. It must be admitted, at the beginning I was not quite sure if there WAS a story. Because this story-telling approach is a slow way to introduce characters and setting, the first half is fairly slow. However, I came to see that a story had gradually crept up on me -- a mystery, in fact. And it was fun. Bonus points for the inclusivity in this book! The inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters and disabilities were beautifully interwoven and oh-so natural! It never felt like the author was "trying hard" to show they were creating inclusive characters and there was never a big show around their introductions or presence in the story. Loved!Thank you to DAW Books and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of the book in return for an honest review! I found this book through NetGalley, and the promise of a "cozy debut science fiction novel tells a story of misfits, rebels, found family—and a mystery that spans the stars" was one I couldn't resist. I've been craving some good cosy fiction lately, especially after my recent string of books I didn't enjoy. The cover was really pretty too. Frontier is The Mandalorian meets Mad Max, with the emotional heart of the Wayfarers series. But at its core, Frontier is a love story, about two women who find each other, lose each other and then find each other again. What passes for justice is presided over by the High Sheriff, and carried out by his cruel and ruthless Deputy. We don't get a name for our main protagonist until close to the end, although she is named Darling at one point, albeit because her name isn't forthcoming. So for a while, I had Darling associated with her until her real name emerged. This cozy debut science fiction novel tells a story of misfits, rebels, found family—and a mystery that spans the stars
