About this deal

The Salomon Sense Ride 5 is the latest version of this popular do-it-all, all-terrain trail running shoe. Essentially, this shoe is designed and marketed for those who want an all-around trail running shoe, suitable for short to long distances and a variety of trail types. In terms of grip, they both perform very well on firmer ground, and despite the Hoka having marginally larger lugs, the difference is negligible. However, because of the extra cushioning, the Challenger 7 is more comfortable on routes involving a larger share of road running.

Disclaimer: We do 4 measurements and exclude any outliers. The photo above shows just one measurement.Salomon is working its way through improving its sustainability, but it is one of the areas where it could do more. The lacing in this section can’t be adjusted much tighter due to its location within the rigid part of the upper, which doesn’t allow for inward flexing, or tightening. I’ll begin this Salomon Sense 5 Ride review by going over the key specifications you should definitely know about. Then, I’ll discuss the positive aspects of the shoe, followed by some negative points. You might think these wiry laces would dig into the top of your foot, but that doesn’t happen because the tongues are nicely padded and the lacing system creates a comfortable fit. 3. A nice responsive ride with great trail feel The 8.3 mm heel-to-toe drop on the Sense Ride may not be suitable for fans of low-drop trail shoes. Toe box space is in short supply but nice-and-secure platform

Another shoe we've tried that looks to offer running versatility is the Hoka Challenger 7. It costs the same as the Sense Ride 5 and is also a road-to-trail type design. Who It’s For: Runners seeking a durable, moderately-cushioned daily trainer with enough grip and dexterity for technical trailsAs a result, there isn’t much space above your foot when the shoe flexes. When this flexing occurs, the additional material puts pressure on the top of your foot. However, our precise measurements show 18.5 mm in the forefoot and 27.2 mm in the heel, so it's less than advertised. The brand is doing quite well on phasing out PFCs from its products. As of 2022, all its footwear is now PFC-free. In addition, all the leather it uses is gold or silver rated by the Leather Working Group. We noticed that the Sense Ride 5 has gotten clearly narrower and less roomy in the forefoot compared to the v4. Because of this, we recommend going up half a size to make the fit work. The Ultra Glide 2 may not be as breathable, but I’m willing to sacrifice that for a more comfortable ride.

It’s related to how the tongue is connected to the upper, where there’s some overlapping material that slightly constricts your foot. If you’re looking for a versatile shoe that can handle various terrains, I definitely recommend giving them a try. First and foremost, as with many Salomon trail running shoes, it’s the Contagrip on the outsole, which you can hopefully see in the image above. The upper is not only durable but also very breathable, providing good temperature regulation during your runs, whether in hot or cold environments. The forefoot has less cushion, but is still pretty good for 10- to 15-milers. Whenever I got past 15-ish miles on a run, I wanted more cushion. This shoe is my go-to for training and even tempo runs, but it doesn’t feel fast enough for real racing—unless the race is a hilly ultra.” Hatt runs with a neutral gait and has a midfoot strike. He currently logs about 50 miles per week at an average 8:30 per mile pace. Stability and Ground FeelIt has a traditional yet aggressive look, while still appearing friendly – if that’s possible haha. The features that I don’t like The shoe’s responsiveness and ability to feel the trail under your feet are fantastic. 4. I like the look and design of them. Salomon chose to use diamond-shaped lugs that measure 3.5 mm, so it's no surprise that this shoe works wonders on both easy and moderately-difficult trails but maybe not enough for the hard ones.
