I think this is really well done with Joanne's character when none of her friends realise that things have to be planned out in advance when babies are in the picture. Like her last contemporary novel, The Snag List, it's a deep dive into the inner lives of millenial women: this time, White takes a look at what it means to try and build and maintain friendships when 30 is rapidly approaching and people's lives are undergoing profound change. I have anxiety, dermatillomania (a body focused repetitive behaviour - constantly picking at skin) and had perinatal OCD.

Her father is unwell, her brother has little respect for what she does and she is beginning to feel like she is on a fast-moving hamster wheel that is spinning out of control. My Hot Friend centres on three women navigating friendship and all the complexities that come with it in this digital age. I loved the different relationships in this book (and by this I mean friendships too, not just romantic relationships) and at times I laughed out loud. After she becomes a mum for the first time though, her friends can’t relate to how her life has changed and disappear just when she needs them. Lexi and Amanda are childhood friends who co-host a podcast where Amanda's brashness tends to get them in trouble with their fanbase.

Her depcition of a manic episode is genuinely frightening to read, as is its aftermath, and there is more than a brief reminder of White's darker writing in the latter chapters.

There is one scene in particular on a plane that is astonishing, both in the writing and in how it plays out.I’m a first time mother myself and have been so disappointed with some of my friendships since entering this new phase so was probably looking for something I could relate to.
