About this deal

La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" was the second single from the album and it has been described by many as its highlight. The remastered vinyl is the original album but comes with a download code to the extra tracks on CD 1 (ie the B-sides) but not, it seems, the music on CD 2. Against that, the remaster is less congested (for example, it's easier to hear the separation of the guitar tracks) and has a better foundation in the low frequencies. In 2013, "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" was chosen by Clash as one of their favourite Manic Street Preachers singles. As well as gearing up for a summer of stadium shows supporting The Killers and Green Day throughout the UK and Europe, the Manics are currently at work on the follow-up to 2018’s acclaimed ‘Resistance Is Futile‘.

The album is the ex-girlfriend they want to forget, while fans keep saying what a ‘nice girl’ she was. The b-sides and the demos aren't quite as mangled in the mastering process as the actual album and the book is decent enough for what it is.Yourself' and 'Symphony Of Tourette' have the same grungey feel as 'Sleepflower', the first being a self-loathing diatribe and the latter being a foul-mouthed, violent outburst surrounded by heavy, disjointed guitars and frenetic drums. pag-booklet featuring lirycs track by track and poster with lyrics in japanese and title to absolute tracks content in this album. Manic Street Preachers have revealed details of the reissue of their 1993 album ‘Gold Against The Soul’. Nostalgic Pushead' interestingly also contains the sound of Sean Moore dropping a snooker ball into a frying pan, such was the freedom to explore whatever musical indulgence they desired.

To be honest, James has got a solo record coming out so it’ll just be some summer shows for us and we’ll try to get a Manics record out for sometime next summer. For some reason, the demos are labelled as ‘remastered’ which makes no sense, since these are previously unreleased. In his review for FMS Magazine, Jimi Arundell addresses the discomfort the band have previously expressed about the record; "It seems that the band have exorcised the needless shame they have always seemed to carry for their second album, and finally given Gold Against The Soul the respect it deserves". Life Becoming A Landslide' is one of Richey's sadder lyrics, containing the words: "My idea of love comes from, a childhood glimpse of pornography/But there is no true love, just a finely tuned jealousy. The album has often divided opinion among fans and critics due to its decadent glam-rock sound and approach. No essays, no attempt to place the album in context, no annotation from any of the band to explain whey they haven’t “always been the most complementary about this album in the past”. We haven’t always been the most complementary about this album in the past, but with hindsight it was a strange and curious record with many fan’s favourites on it.

Scream To A Sigh (La Tristesse Durera)', also sounds quite majestic, with thoughtful subject matter, lamenting over the neglect of war heroes, the title referencing the final line of Van Gogh's suicide note.Indeed, the Manics did spend a fortune on recording this album, to a ridiculous extent, and this is certainly clear from the production values. Bonus content included previously unreleased demos, B-sides from the era, remixes, and a live recording, while the CD was released alongside a book of unseen photographs from the era with handwritten annotations and lyrics from the band.

This was one of the most obvious hints at what would be Richey Edward's lasting legacy: a sadness and loneliness which was to cripple him to the point of despair. James’ room was haunted in the manor and thought that there was something coming in and turning his lights and TV on every night. Regarding the album's influences, bassist Nicky Wire remarked that Gold Against the Soul was "all Alice in Chains and Red Hot Chili Peppers", and that he was emulating Flea at the time. This is all the more disappointing because the Manics are normally pretty good at offering decent value packages when it comes to reissues. When I found that demo and played it to James, he was shocked as well at how it fitted in with our later post-punk ideas.

The book only contains photos: I would have loved to hear from the band why they're so ambivalent about the album, but there are no interviews or new essays to help shed light on the album at all.
