About this deal

For somebody like me that wants only the best, this doesn't work even if they put the movie on one disc and placed the extras on a Blu-ray. Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel captured Drive digitally at 1080p resolution, primarily using ARRI ALEXA cameras with Angénieux Optimo zoom lenses, though he switched to Cooke S4 and Zeiss Master Prime lenses for the car interiors. The stunts and fight choreography are such a pleasure to the eye, but you can see the budget was low, so some scenes look dated, they looked dated even back in the '90s. If you’re looking for a good time that only ‘90s-era action cinema can provide, then Drive in this new 4K Blu-ray edition is just the ticket. This would cover any potential low-bit-rate moments and any ability to resolve film grain in poorly lit scenes. Bryan Cranston, with the introduction of BREAKING BAD a few years ago, has been a revelatory performer. There are several standout moments, including one of the early shots of Carey Mulligan's heroine, bathed in glorious sunshine within her apartment, positively glowing in a picture-perfect freeze-frame moment. One word of caution about this new presentation, though: I viewed some wear on some of the shots, most notably seen in the wider exterior sequences with blue skies in the background.

The disc-based content is identical to their gorgeous Limited Edition set that’s long out-of-print (more on that later). The tones - and tracks - chosen are meaningful, evocative and emotionally binding, blending diegetic and non-diegetic play within single sequences to sublime effect, and the new Atmos track enjoys bringing this track to a newly enhanced format in a perfectly organic fashion, putting the music front and centre, and sweeping you up in the enduring marriage of sound and visuals. This Ultra HD Blu-ray delivers a glorious 4K presentation, Dolby Vision HDR graded by the film's original colourist. Films and MVD Entertainment Group bestowed this release with a decent Dolby Atmos track that gives some much-needed life to film’s many foley effects. I however felt that the scenes of violence stressed the lengths people will go to when trying to gain or protect certain things. We reviewed the UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Drive on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
