About this deal

Now, because I want to keep this as straightforward for you as possible I’m going to be making some sweeping generalizations. And because I’m going to be oversimplifying this, I have to tell you something upfront. What I describe may or may not reflect your experience of your cycle. The timing of events in your cycle and how you feel may be slightly different, or very different, to what I’m about to describe. They may be different to your BFF’s or sister’s experience of their cycle, or for that matter mine. That doesn’t mean that yours is wrong. All it means is that you have a unique experience of your cycle and your hormones, and that’s true of every person with a cycle. Okay? But the hormone we’re more concerned with in the second half of the cycle is progesterone. Progesterone is your pro-gestation hormone. It’s produced as a result of ovulation, which is why it’s there in the second half of the cycle. Progesterone's main job is to support conception and pregnancy, though it does lots of other great things for your body too. Medical book to be read by women and even men to avoid unwanted problems and have a healthy balanced lifestyle. And to be honest with you, that’s exactly how I feel about the main pieces of research around HRT which were done over 20 years ago now but which newspaper headlines are still largely based on. What a load of nonsense. So the whole HRT is dangerous, I’m saying that’s false. Woah, this book is useful! I will be returning to this a lot, working on the cycle strategy and heightening my awareness of my cycle, but I am sure this will stay a five star read for me.

Now, we can break the cycle down into smaller phases. And that’s something I’ll be getting into in future episodes. But for now, I just want you to understand the two halves of the cycle. That’s because how we think, feel, and act is often different in each half of the cycle. And understanding why this may be the case for you is going to make a massive difference to your life. Pros: full of interesting insights about what my hormones are doing while I'm just sitting there. I wish I knew this stuff sooner and just learning about it is pretty empowering.

To celebrate the launch of the show, I’m giving away three annual subscriptions to my amazing online community The Flow Collective . Along the way I also became a highly-qualified practitioner and spent over a decade helping clients with period problems, fertility challenges, and pregnancy and menopausal symptoms. I want you to go from hormone hell to harmony I just can't express how much I couldn't relate to literally any of her descriptions, except Autumn. And that made it really difficult for me to take the rest of the book as seriously as she takes herself. There's a lot of floof, as other reviewers have said, and while it's clear that to some extent she knows what she's talking about, she's also drunk the new age kool-aid -- and she's not great at drawing boundaries around what's kool-aid and what's legit. So it all sort of melds together into her anecdotes and season-speak, alongside legitimately helpful information about hormones and body cycles (and why hormonal birth control is really terrifying).

When you have this knowledge of the cycle you can make sense of what your cycle is like. Yes, you can also make adjustments where possible to your schedule. But even without taking that kind of action this information will change your experience of your cycle because, let’s say you’re close to ovulating and you can’t concentrate on your work. Whether you are in further study or not, don’t miss this episode where we share some insight into the world of academia and the impact that undertaking further education can have on our overall health. Discover the power of learning to manage your mind, the importance of celebrating yourself, your results, and your successes, and how to do the work you love without feeling drained. This book is NOT ONLY about Period but way more than that.It is so beautifully written in lucid words it never felt heavy even presents motivation that however our body looks WE ALL ARE BEAUTIFUL naturally. Period Power reveals a new way of being for people who menstruate. Based in fact and articulated with both love and humour, Maisie Hill's strategy - to work with our cycles rather than against them - is life-changing. * Lisa Williams, The Hotbed Collective * Defining Your Relationship with Your Cycle: How to change the way you think about your cycle, and why treating it like a friend will encourage a more harmonious relationship.I don't know if this was mainly because I'd already fairly recently read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler (which was a phenomenally helpful and insightful text, almost like the bible of fertility really), but I didn't really find much in Maisie Hill's book that I didn't already know, at least from a biological perspective. The first few chapters are fairly comprehensive in terms of the female reproductive system and understanding how your body works, and Hill writes in a way that makes the topic very accessible. So there are definitely some positives to this book, especially if you haven't read much on the subject before and are fairly new to it. For a long time in sport we've treated female athletes like ‘little men’. We've used things that have worked in male athletes and just transposed them onto training and support in females, and that seems to ignore the fact that the biology of these two individuals are completely different. You're ignoring this massive opportunity to tap into the potential of understanding your hormones and utilising them.

So many of us have a Jekyll and Hyde experience of our lives; we feel on top of the world, capable, confident and sexy for part of each month, then find ourselves in a state of physical and emotional discomfort and fatigue, wanting nothing more than to collapse on the sofa in front of Netflix. But what if instead of just trying to plan for our dark days, women were equipped with ways to improve them? What if our desire to improve ourselves could be combined with our need to know just what our womb and ovaries are getting up to every month? Not to mention how to take advantage of the natural superpowers that sit in each phase of our cycle, so that we can plan our month to perform at our best. Immediate DNF after the introduction and reading the disclaimer, “Not everyone who is a woman has a menstrual cycle or womb, and not everyone who has a menstrual cycle and a womb is a woman”. I’m sorry, but my trust in the reliability of your science ends there. The menstrual cycle and womb are literally THE primary biological markers of womanhood. If you’re going to deny that basic fact just so you don’t offend some people, you don’t have the credibility it takes to write a book on the menstrual cycle. I am a woman, not a “menstruator”, not a “person with a period”, and I will save my time for a book that appreciates the God-given uniqueness of my female biology/physiology. Maisie Hill approaches the subject with love, care, and tenderness. And sometimes that's what we need. I will openly admit I cried my eyes out in the first chapter. I was in a bad place with my periods before I started this book and I needed to feel like I want you to be honest, tell me what you think, and how I can make the podcast even more helpful… Make sure you hit “Send!” Some of you will have elderly parents, perhaps you’re part of organisations and things going on in your community. And I say all of this because it’s a good idea to actually stop and recognise all the different things that we are doing because often we arrive at this stage of life realising how much we do for others and how often put ourselves last. And of course some of these roles we love and value and we wouldn’t change them. But I’m going to guess that there are aspects of your life that you’re not happy with for one reason or another.Moving on, maybe you’ve got some sass going on. Maybe you’re feeling a bit flirtatious. Again, this all helps with the typical human mating strategy. Our behavior is helping us to take advantage of the fertile window in the cycle when conception is possible. With two decades of professional experience under her belt, Maisie helps you drop the cycle of inner criticism, shame, and self-judgement so you can feel at home in your mind and body.

Maisie Hill has written a bloody brilliant book (pun intended). Everything you need to know about periods and how they affect you and your life is here. It's revolutionary. * Miranda Sawyer * I’ve had my own battles with my cycle - from debilitating period pain that meant I couldn’t walk let alone work, to extreme mood swings and intrusive thoughts - and I spent years trying out every treatment strategy possible in a bid to sort my cycle out. This fantastic guide to menstruation is the perfect way to learn more about the human body and how periods impact far more than we realize. Striking the perfect balance between research and accessibility, this book will have you saying, 'Wow, I had no idea!' at least once per chapter. * BookRiot * Maybe your body feels a bit antsy. You’ll be able to recognize that this is your body trying to get you to take a walk and find a mate.

So this woman read the guidelines and when her GP suggested more blood tests she was able to say, “Look, I think I meet the criteria, this is what the NICE guidelines say.” And because of that she was just referred to a menopause clinic. And I will link to the NICE guidelines in the show notes so that you can read them too and perhaps take them into your appointments if you’re having any discussions with GPs or other healthcare professionals. Maisie Hill gets rid of myths, sheds some light and allows for an open, honest and much-needed conversation * Mind * So if you found this episode helpful then you’re going to love Perimenopause Power because there’s a lot of helpful information and strategies in there to really equip you for your perimenopause and post menopause whether you’re already in it or just wanting to be prepared. Writing this book, I have to say has been such a gift to me personally because it’s allowed me to make decisions ahead of time and to start implementing things now so that I’m really just preparing to have a positive experience of perimenopause. And that’s what I want for you too. And oh my God, the sleep issues that become more prevalent as we age, let’s not forget about the impact of them on mental health too. So there are a multitude of reasons why mental health can suffer but I don’t think it’s coincidental that our risk of suicide is highest when oestrogen drops off around the time of menopause. Do you truly believe in yourself at all times in all circumstances? Relying solely on self-belief that comes from the good times is limiting, like building a sandcastle by the water’s edge. It might stand tall and proud for a little while, but it is vulnerable to the next wave that comes in, and it can crumble at any time. True self-belief is built regardless of what’s happening with the weather and the tide, and can’t be affected by external circumstances.
