About this deal

There are two main options when growing tomatoes in a greenhouse – grow bags or pots. Both have their pros and cons, so it’s often down to your individual preferences, so let’s take a closer look at each method to see what might work best. Grow Bag vs Pots

You may have heard of grow bags, but not know what they are or how best to use (or choose) one. So in this in-depth guide from South West Greenhouses, we're going to give you everything we know about grow bags! Read on. What is a Grow Bag? Some shading will be necessary; it is best to add this gradually, as it will initially reduce growth The cover features two metal eyelets at the top and an eyelet on each side. This allows you to position canes vertically and horizontally to support your tomato plants and aid their growth. Scoop out compost from each square leaving a hole big enough for the root ball of your plant. Put a plant in each hole and refill around it with compost. The top of each root ball should be just below the top of the bag. Related Articles Young, well-rooted tomato plants grown from seed indoors should be ready to plant into their final position in early summer, once all danger of frost is past. You can also buy young plants from garden centres and online suppliers in late spring and early summer. Water regularly so the bag doesn’t dry out. In hot weather, this may need to be up to three times a day. If using a vertical string, gently wind the string around the top of the main stem once or twice a week as it grows. Sow broad beans and peas to over-winter and be planted out once clay soils are more manageable in early in spring

Plant one young courgette plant into a container that’s at least 45cm (18in) wide, filled with soil-based or multi-purpose compost. Then sprinkle a handful of general purpose fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4 over the compost. Water the plant in well, and continue watering regularly. Cucumbers are easy to grow from seed indoors, or can be bought as young plants or grafted plants in spring or early summer. Make sure you select a variety suitable for your growing location – a greenhouse or an outdoor type. Greenhouse varieties crop for a longer season, from mid-summer through to early autumn. Outdoor varieties are weather dependent, starting to fruit later and finishing earlier, but should still produce a good crop in warm conditions. Fill 10cm (4in) pots with seed compost, water well, then sow one seed in the centre of each, 1–2cm (½–¾in) deep. Position the seeds on their side to prevent rotting. There are many courgette varieties to choose from – some making large trailing plants, ideal if you have plenty of space, while others are bushy and compact, great in small veg plots or containers. Blinds are an investment worth making for your greenhouse. Keep the internal blinds open to heat your greenhouse when the sun is shining, and when it gets dark, lower them to keep the heat in. Insulate with bubble wrap.Powdery mildew, afungal disease forms a white powdery coating on the leaves, which dry out and shrivel, hindering the plant’s growth. Water regularly, but avoid wetting the leaves. Large pots and growbags are an alternative where soil is suspect. Cover soil with plastic sheeting, ideally white, and place pots or bags on this.Potting media including growbags can be re-used at least once for different crops if no diseases are present. Tomatoes do well in large containers and growing bags in a greenhouse or outdoors in full sun, and are very productive in a space. Use loam-based or multi-purpose compost. Plant one tomato per 30–45cm (12–18in) pot and two in a growing bag. OutCreator grow bags feature a unique trademark in the world of grow bags. They’ve taken the classic design and added a “harvest window” to allow you access to the roots without the hassle of digging.

This method is a good option if you can only source smaller grow bags or there is less space in your greenhouse. The handles on these heavy-duty grow bags are made of reinforced 300D nylon to ensure that they’re strong enough to carry the weight of an entire bag of soil. You can make these yourself using old plant pots. Just cut the bottom of an old 8/9” plant pot and place it a few inches into the grow bag – just cut more of the bag away t make space. This lets you increase the soil volume without needing to buy purpose made bottomless plant pots. Cucumbers are best sown indoors, as they can be started off earlier to get an earlier crop. Germination is also more reliable and young plants are easier to look after until they’re more resilient. They should be moved to their final growing position after about a month.

Every gardener would benefit greatly from having a greenhouse as it lets them make the most of the sun. Gardeners will be able to extend the growing season and harvest a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers from even the smallest, unheated structure.
