About this deal

Death Under a Little Sky is out today, and its author told Chris: “It's a guy [Jake] who lives in the city. He’s a detective, he gets burnt out, he has a horrible relationship. And then he inherits a house in the middle of nowhere, where there's no internet connection, there's no phone connection. Jake leaves his failed marriage and job as Detective for a house in the middle of nowhere. Living totally off grid offers the opportunity to renegotiate a life that hasn’t gone well so far.. Embracing the practical and mental challenges of his self imposed exile, Jake is consoled by a library of detective novels, listening to music, swimming in the lake and the wildlife.. Life in the middle of nowhere is everything Jake could wish for. His home is beautiful and his surroundings are stunning. While the locals are eccentric, they are also friendly, and invite him to join their annual treasure hunt.

I do think this was more of a cosy thriller compared to the more edge of your seat thriller. However, that didn't take away my enjoyment of the book. Jake himself is at the centre and in a sense the whole book is a character study of him, seeing how he retreats gratefully from a world that has become difficult for him, embracing the isolation absolutely but also wondering if this is a temporary healing process or how he wants to live for ever. He is damaged, but so much more authentically than the drunken angst-ridden detectives who bore their way through contemporary crime fiction. Introspective and aware of his own emotional state, he is also empathetic and kind, and those qualities mean that he gradually starts making tentative connections of his own. And he finds in himself a love of nature, of the joy of growing his own food and making things from wood, and of watching the weather and the seasons; all of which Abell writes about beautifully. Yeah, the prose was so purple it was nearly eggplant. And speaking of which, the romantic subplot (main plot, more like) was bad. Insta-romance between paper thin characters that only served to give the author the opportunity to describe her milky breasts and his pubic hair. No, really. Ik wil World of Thrillers en uitgeverij HarperCollins bedanken dat ik dit boek, Dodelijke afloop van Stig Abell, mocht lezen voor een review.

We ask experts to recommend the five best books in their subject and explain their selection in an interview. However, for all the love and affection of detective novels on display, the plot is fairly standard and not especially gripping. I absolutely loved the clever use of reference to great literary detectives in the story and the map at the front of the book. I loved the uncomplicated setting (English country side), the characters and Jake’s introverted quest for isolation, books and music. Of course, all of this are interrupted by a decade old mystery that Jake just can’t leave alone.Het nieuwe leven bevalt Jake prima en hij weet zich goed te vermaken zonder alle luxe van zijn leven in London. Dit zorgzame leven verandert alsl hij tijdens een jaarlijkse speurtocht een tas met menselijk botten vindt. Previously he worked as a detective in the heart of the city, and his last case definitely made him want something different. Moving into Little Sky definitely gave home something different to what he was used to and I think Jake was extremely grateful for that respite.

Firstly, let's start with the setting.. the countryside.. the author made this superbly atmospheric.. throw in a murder and you've got the perfect story. The fact that the small village was completely isolated from any real civilisation made it a whole lot more eerie. Firstly, let’s set the scene, Jake has given up his detective job following a letter from his uncle, leaving him a property in a beautifully depicted rural escape. Jake leaves for a fresh start, but everything isn’t quite as beautiful as it seems following the annual treasure hunt and he winds up pulled into old boots to assist with solving the mystery of an uncovered death! From August 2014, the show was co-presented by Abell and LBC's Petrie Hosken. In January 2015, he was given his own show from 8 am to 10 am on Sundays. From April 2016, Abell moved to the afternoon slot on Sundays of 3 pm to 6 pm. There seemed to be no issue with vehicles travelling across anybody’s land (and the locals are hardly amenable.)The village has very little. A general store, which doubles as a bar. A church, but no vicar. No school and not much of anything else, while Jake's new house has a magnificent library and a lake, but no bathroom or washing machine. Gradually, he begins to get to know his surroundings and the few locals. Livia, the local vet, Dr Peter, an elderly biologist, Sarah at 'The Jolly Nook,' and a host of vaguely hostile, insular locals, mainly consisting of recalcitrant matrons and aggressive farmhands. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.
