About this deal

Sir John Anderson (a member of the House of Commons and placed in charged of Air Raid Precautions or ARP) divided the UK into three areas:

Noel Streatfeild's novel When the Sirens Wailed (1974) is about three evacuees and covers issues like rations for evacuees, relationship between evacuees and townspeople, and the problems encountered by those who stayed behind. Mr E Kingston of Vansittart Road, New Cross, who saw two of his children leave on the train said, 'It is the only sensible thing to do. I am not worrying.' Sometimes the evacuees were assigned a family to live with. In other cases, the host families came to the village hall and chose the children they would take with them.Poster used by the British government in the London Underground to spread the word about the evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II. British Ministry of Health poster Across the country throughout the war and particularly in three separate waves of 1939, 1940 and 1944, children, mothers and vulnerable citizens left their homes, not knowing where they would end up, who with, or for how long. Luggage had to be limited. Parents were issued with a list detailing what their children should take with them when evacuated. Though the list was short for such a journey, in fact many families struggled even to provide their children with all the items listed. Devon was a popular evacuate location due to its rolling hills and large landscape, making it unlikely that German planes would release bombs there; however, densely populated areas were typically chosen for bombings to further deplete the war effort. 175 Bristol Children Evacuated To Devon During Wwii Find Happiness

Waiting rooms, turned into first-aid posts at various stations for the children, were rarely if ever used.On the one hand, the evacuations of the Second World War led to greater state involvement in the lives of families, which led to changes in the administration of social services, the School Medical Service and the provision of nursery schools. It also led to an increased interest in childhood mental health: psychoanalysts such as Anna Freud (daughter of Sigmund) worked with evacuee children and developed theories on the effects of mother-child separation. Many argued that the future stability of the very state itself rested on the growth of well-adjusted children. Evacuation also exposed disparities in wealth and health which encouraged people to look for solutions in a comprehensive welfare system, something that Clement Attlee's Labour Party seemed to promise with its 1945 general election manifesto. Guernsey Evacuees by Gillian Mawson (History Press, 2012) shares the personal testimony of Guernsey evacuees in Britain during the Second World War. The British Evacuees Association celebrated its 21st Birthday with the Dedication of our National Memorial to the Evacuation by HRH The Duke of Gloucester on 25th July 2017. Our memorial stands proudly next to the Children’s play area at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. However, contrasting experiences have stayed with the evacuees and what is left can only be described as the best of times and the worst of times.
