About this deal

Genesis also worked with the BBC for the 2014 documentary Genesis: Together and Apart, which featured a reunion interview with the classic '70s quintet: Gabriel, Collins, Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett. Another one from the Genesis/BBC live archives in which we pose a question that’s been bubbling around a while now: Is there a definitive Genesis live album?

The album marks the first release of the band's 1980 Lyceum Theatre (which includes the entire "Duke Suite") and 1987 Wembley Stadium concerts in an audio-only format.

Genesis Live 1981 - Abacab Tour - The complete 2-hour-performance - Audio remastered from the original multitracks and video digitally enhanced in HD. Likewise, the chorus of “Get ‘Em Out by Friday,” rivals the later material in terms of catchiness; it’s just that the hooks are spread out over eight-plus minutes. This 1971 rendition, for example, of “Stagnation”—a tune predominantly made up of space—reveals a band that excelled at listening.

If they are actually going to release the full slate of BBC-recorded performances, I would expect Knebworth '78 to be included. The released media mislabels track 1 as Shepherd and track 2 as Pacidy, however the correct song titles are vice versa. Moreover, BBC Broadcasts draws from a hodgepodge of different performances—often a surefire recipe for a mess of a listening experience.

The press release says "curated by Tony Banks", plus the info (from the official promo clip) that Nick Davis remixed and remastered the original master tapes.

For starters, it’s nigh impossible to encompass the arc of Genesis’s career within the confines of one release—even one that spans multiple discs (five CDs or three LPs). In any case, the recordings of the live concerts are relatively raw and of course do not shine with the glossy sound that you find on official live albums. For the 1992 Knebworth show, which took place on August 2, a ticket from the cancelled August 1 show is illustrated - this is a nice curiosity, to say the least.

He created and edited Classic Rock Magazine for Dennis Publishing in 1998 and is the author of a variety of books on both music and sport, including WonderousStories; A Journey Through The Landscape Of Progressive Rock. Stretching back from the very beginnings of the band’s career via appearances on Night Ride and John Peel, the set encompasses both of the group’s Knebworth performances from both 1978 and 1992, as well as their much-loved 1980 show at London’s Lyceum, and the sell-out run of shows at Wembley in 1987. On the third CD we find a Domino motif (known from the tour program), but only the last two tracks on the CD are from Wembley 1987.However, it’s not perfect, being a compilation of recordings from 1977 (and 1976) which aside from Afterglow doesn’t even feature anything else from the album they were promoting at the time.
