The lower portion is usually set horizontally and acts as a forearm support. Vertical rails may assist when pulling up into a standing position or for just maintaining balance. What is your overall balance and ability to stand like? Most grab rails are permanently fixed in one position onto the wall, floor, ceiling, or a combination.
