That same winning tonal balance is evident, and the small harmonic dynamics are paid just as much attention as the more obvious ‘quiet/LOUD/quiet’ variety. Those four mid/bass drivers do a fine job of communicating all the character and individuality of Karen O’s vocal, and the Katch One brings her to the front and centre of the soundstage without estranging her from everything occurring around her. The first setting offers a focused and very linear audio reproduction that serves to draw out the often elusive mid-range frequency area. The Sony HT-A7000 is an outstanding, future-proofed, all-in-one performer with excellent integration if you have a newer Sony Bravia TV. The SF150 also features Sony's S-Force Front Surround technology, which applies processing to give the acoustic impression of a more encompassing sound stage. While there is no replacement for surround sound,it adds a dramatic sense of weight and separation.

This soundbar will make a delightful addition to your TV set up. The crisp, dynamic audio is far beyond what you’ll get from your flat panel and this is sonically superior to all of its similarly priced rivals. Just make sure you’ve got the space and inclination to position it properly. Of course, if you want ultimate immersion then you may want to pair your soundbar with the best multi-room wi-fi speakers (making sure to get the same brand of speakers and soundbar) to create a true surround sound system. You’ll probably also want to add a subwoofer if you enjoy deep, cinema-like bass. The Katch One’s dearth of features is where it falls short. Despite not being the best bargain, this soundbar doesn’t appear to be aiming to be. It’s a lovely soundbar for those looking for something lovely to place underneath their TV. The swatch of acoustic cloth across the front is interrupted only by the IR sensor for the remote control. It’s a tidy, coherent looker than manages to look a little more stylish and a little less functional than the norm. A third, more stylish, option is to hang it from a TV using the included leather straps that also serve to hide any cables running to the soundbar. The placement of woofers is optimized for wall-mounting, so the best placement option is against a wall to achieve the intended bass response. Along with its four shallow-depth 3.5-inch woofers and four 4.5-inch steel cone passive radiators, the Katch One has two 0.8-inch soft dome tweeters placed close to the outer left/right edges that provide a beautifully spacious soundstage.Manufacturers have tried, with varying success, to enhance the audio coming from their televisions. But, if you want to improve TV audio, you need a separate speaker designed for that purpose. There is little more frustrating than not being able to hear dialogue when watching a TV show or movie, but inevitably, varying levels of speech clarity combined with how busy the soundscape is and the overall style of the mix can mean that whispery, mumbly vocals hinder even a top-quality, room-tuned soundbar. Turn it up and a lot of that quality is compromised, with the Denon losing its poise and composure at higher volumes. But as long as you listen at sensible levels, the Home 550 is a good-looking and likeable soundbar. If the highest-quality 3D sound is important to you, you'll want to make sure both your TV and potential soundbar support Dolby TrueHD and eARC. Some Dolby Atmos Soundbars will only have ARC, and while that can handle Dolby Atmos, it can only do so in its lossy Dolby Digital Plus form. In contrast, Dolby TrueHD can deliver full-fat Dolby Atmos in all its lossless glory. The topic of “good TV sound” has been a big issue for Dali Speaker A/S for years, and it was a great surprise to many that they did not deal with classic soundbar systems as intensively as other loudspeaker specialists. With the Dali KATCH One, however, the company now has a solution on offer that once again does things differently from comparable systems on the market and can therefore present itself almost perfectly.Give it time, though, and listen closely. The well-judged balance of the Katch One’s tonality means it manages to be subtly detailed, even though it gives the whole of the frequency range full expression.

The auto power-on function for the dedicated TV input is activated by the optical output from the TV. This ensures that the KATCH ONE is on and ready as soon as the TV is on. The second optical input is designed for use with audio devices such as CD players and audio streamers. This input enables auto power on/off based on the audio signal - even if the carrier does not turn off the carrier light in standby mode.So the Katch One is all serenity above the surface – but, like a swan, there’s some furious action going on underneath. Yes, a thousand pounds sounds like a lot for a ‘just’ a soundbar. But B&W’s Formation Bar does plenty to justify its sizeable price tag – as long as you’ve got space: its wavy shell might seem slim, but at 124cm long it needs plenty of elbow room. And the Danish company Dali Speaker A/S is one of these specialists, because for a long time now they have been dealing with the problem of good television sound in many different ways. However, Dali Speaker A/S did not really have a large number of these sound bar systems on offer. In 2014, Dali Speaker A/S presented the Dali KUBIK ONE system, an extremely elegant soundbar, which was to be understood as much more than just a flexible all-in-one system. Streaming wirelessly via Bluetooth may up the convenience quotient more than somewhat, but it impacts just a little on the Katch One’s fidelity. The DALI may be able to receive and deal with an MQA file of Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood and give it most of the weight and all the momentum it requires, but somehow the integration of all those drivers (which has been impeccable until now) suffers.

It expands on a range which started with the Katch portable speaker in 2017, reviewed here and described by Marc Rushton as “class-leading”, no less. Build quality is sublime. Behind the pretty exterior the unit is a single piece of extruded aluminium with enough heft and strength to withstand a bomb blast. The use of aluminium enables a compact cabinet with thinner walls than traditional materials would allow, but without compromising on bass depth or cabinet rigidity. Dark grey aluminium panels bookend the bar, with a brushed strip visible at the bottom. It is precisely because the Dali KATCH one blends so discreetly into the room, taking up very little space, that it is all the more astonishing what sound can unfold here as soon as the first notes are heard.
