About this deal

TIP: You can make the WINGS removable by using velcro to attach them! Your Bumble Bee is ready to LOVE! Come join the fun on Facebook! TIP: I added the CHEEKS to cover the dimples at the end of the mouth dart. You can make these any contrasting colour of your choosing, or leave them off. STEP 30a Nothing brings joy to the Summer Nature Table quite like a Bumble Bee. Capture the open airiness of a summer's day, the pleasure of watching nature's finest workers as they bumble from flower to flower. Sew the topstitch lines with a slightly longer than normal stitch as you are sewing through a lot of layers! When I first discovered needle felting somebody told me that it wasn't appropriate for young children to even witness adults doing this craft, due to the way that they imitate the gestures of adults around them. Looking at my son, who at the time was of an age where I was constantly having to discourage him from hitting, jabbing and poking things, I decided that this was good advice for my family! Now, at 7, I felt that he would be fine with it, and he managed the craft well, with no adverse effects! Either way, please be aware that needle felting needles are very sharp. If you are crafting with a younger child, or feel that they are not quite ready for needle felting, you can make the Felt Bee using the wet felting technique in our Wet Felted Acorns blog.

It's very important to buy proper felting wool of the exact type listed as well as proper needles. Neither are expensive, but if you buy poor quality cheaper alternatives they may well be useless to felt with.Once your bee body is formed to your satisfaction pull off a fine length of orange wool and roll it slightly between your hands into a long thin sausage shape. and pin them to the FACE PIECES using the pattern markings to guide. ( The tip of the feelers must point to the side.) Trace the FEELER PIECE onto a double layer of fabric (with right sides together!). Sew the FEELER PIECES together on the sewing line. if you have no cash and enjoyed this please share this Instructable and follow me on social media here:

Cut around the sewing line with a 3mm(¼ inch) seam allowance. Clip the seam allowance, especially where it is very curved then turn the FEELER PIECES right sides out. Cut a length of sewing thread and tie it around your cone. The thread will fit easily into the gaps of the cone so that it is not visible going round.Pin the ABDOMEN PIECES (with the fabric right sides together) at the end dart, matching points L and sew the end dart closed. Use a fabric pen, or tailor’s chalk to draw where to sew the topstitch lines on the WINGS, using the pattern markings to guide you. Pin the ARMS to the FACE PIECES using the pattern markings to guide you… and sew them in position with a 3mm(⅛inch) seam allowance. TIP: Do not sew the ABDOMEN PIECES from H and K. We need to leave the PIECES open at the top so it’s easier to sew them together with the ARMS and LEGS in Stab the wool to make it hold that oval shape. Stabbing with the needle more deeply will make more of a dent in the wool, while stabbing lightly will just affect the surface. The more you stab, the firmer and smaller your bee will be. To tidy any straggling loose threads of wool and smooth up the surface stab at an angle along the body so the needle just pierces along the surface. This will smooth the surface without shrinking the overall shape as much.

Pull off a small piece of white merino wool and this time keep it spread out and fluffy. Fold the edges into the middle to create two wings, and attach them to your bee using the needle. Pin the LEGS to the THORAX 2 PIECES using the pattern markings to guide you and sew them in position with a 3mm(⅛inch) seam allowance. Pull the LEGS out of the Bee’s body, pin the ABDOMEN PIECES closed (so the LEGS are on the outside of the body) and sew from H – K. Pin the WING fabric with right sides facing on top of the piece of batting and sew through all 3 layers, on the sewing line you traced. Leaning on your sponge, needle felt your carded will into a rounded oval shape. ( Squeeze your wool as much as you can into the shape you want and then push the needle in and out of it. Every time the needle goes in it will bind the wool together and make the shape tighter ).

FEELERS

Rip off a small rectangular piece of white tissue paper and twist it in the middle. Place it on top of your cone, where the thread is coming up, and knot your thread over it. Pull a small piece of yellow merino wool off, twist it to bring the strands together, and wrap it around your body shape.

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Bee Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos! Bees are very versatile; I add the small ones to other sculptures, I add a pin to make them into cute brooches, add a wire and they fly over your plants, add a magnet and they decorate your fridge. Use (paper) scissors to cut out the shape of the EYES in the template for the FACE PIECE so you can transfer the eye position markings onto the RIGHT SIDE of the fabric of the FACE PIECES. Fold the LEGS PIECES, as shown on the pattern markings, so that the seams are together in the centre and pin them closed at the top. (This is so that the feet will face forwards.)

Trim the 3 layers, leaving 3mm (⅛ inch) outside the sewing line, and clip the seam well to help the WINGS turn nicely. There are loads of good vendors that sell wool and needles, I have included links to the ones I buy from, but there are plenty more, just buy from a shop specifically for needle felting. A lot of kits sold by art shops that are supposed to be for needle felting really are not fit for purpose.
