About this deal

Cashew nut milk wasn't assessed in Poore and Nemecek's study but a 2022 paper published in the journal Sustainability Science by Cap, Bots, and Scherer, found cashews had the worst environmental score of 10 nuts and seeds when ranked across 11 environmental, nutritional and social indicators though the data varied depending on the agricultural system used. It's pretty similar to almond milk. It's low calorie and low fat and low in saturated fat but it's very low in protein. It's similar to oat milk in its protein content which is signficantly lower than soya or cow's milk. Below, you’ll find a brief buying guide answering some of the questions you might have about dairy-free milk but, if you want to get straight to the lactose-free goodies, you can skip ahead to our product roundup. On the three main factors considered in the Poore and Nemecek study, soya milk has the lowest overall impact. Most notably it uses a fraction of the water of the global cow’s milk industry – over 22 times less and 11 times less than European cow's milk.

Oats make up 10% of Oatly’s milk which is mixed with water. The next largest ingredient is rapeseed oil. Summary: Not the best environmental choice, because of water use and methane emissions. Is rice milk good for you?Plenish is made from just three ingredients: almonds, water and salt, and contains no additives such as gums, lecithin or carrageenan, which are often used in similar drinks. It is made from 6% almonds, which means it has a high concentration of nuts compared with its competitors and has a wonderful toasted almond flavour that works really well in white coffee and in baking when you want an almond flavour. Plenish works with small growers and cooperatives to responsibly source organic produce and offset their carbon emissions, making them a good environmental choice too. Innocent Hazelnut ★★★★★ Soya drinks were one of the first milk alternatives available and remain a really popular choice as they goes well with most things due to their delicate, creamy flavour.

It may be that you are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy products and you might be looking for substitutes which don’t upset your digestive system. You may therefore wish to consider lactose-free milk. Last year, Alpro launched a plant milk they were so confident was perfect for a classic British cup of tea that they called it ‘ My Cuppa’. Made with a unique blend of soya, vegetable oils and fats and chicory root fibre, it’s designed to be your brew bestie, whether you like it dark, stand-a-spoon-in-it strong or a delicate shade of pale. This milk substitute is rich and creamy as well as gluten free and free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. Brown in colour, this drink will remind you of chocolate milk when you drink it straight from the bottle. It's delicious.Alpro sells a fantastic range of plant-based milks, coconut, almond and cashew to name a few, but this is my least favourite. It's good to see that many coffee shops now offer oat milk alongside soya, as it is by far the best vegan milk on the market in my opinion. Rice milkis a dairy free drink with a silky texture and a subtly sweet taste which comes from its natural ingredients. There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning, tired, groggy, and desperately searching for your early morning caffeine fix only for the milk to curdle in your cup. That’s where Minor Figures Oat Milk steps in, promising barista quality oat milk that mixes wonderfully when heated through or splashed in cold. And a recent study on water use by treenuts and groundnuts found that cashews used the highest volume of water (though pistachios and almonds used more blue water - irrigated water as opposed to rainfall).

The product we looked at has a climate footprint of 0.31kg CO2e, much less than in the Poore and Nemecek research, but the way this is measured is slightly different to the Poore and Nemecek study so not directly comparable. People are unlikely to allergic to potatoes but Dug also contains pea protein which some people can be allergic to. The company, owned by Coca Cola, noted poor sales figures as one of the key drivers behind the decision. Keep trying different varieties until you find your favourite. Or select different milks for different purposes: one may simply taste better to you in your coffee or on your cereal than another.

Hemp seed milk contains naturally occurring omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential for health. Vegans and those following a plant-based diet must take care to get enough of these in their diets, particularly omega-3, so hemp seed milk could be a useful source. Potato milk wasn't included in Poore and Nemecek's study so it can't be directly compared but Dug claims its original product has a carbon footrpint of 0.27kg CO2eq and its unsweetened has 0.31kg CO2eq which are impressively low figures. Dug also claims that potatoes are twice as land efficient as oats. And the Water Footprint Network says that potatoes use 287 litres/kg (again not comparable to Poore and Nemecek's figures) making them a pretty water efficient crop - rice as a comparison here uses 2497 litres/kg. Summary: While we can’t compare it with other non-dairy alternatives as it’s not included in the available data, hemp is a low impact crop with some interesting sustainability credentials. Is hemp seed milk good for you? Alpro Almond Milkis gluten free and perfect for adding to coffee or eating with your breakfast cereal.
