About this deal

In particular, she often talks about how most judges are completely out of touch with the general population, which can definitely impact their judgement.

The percentage of women in the profession was small and confined to the lower ranks, with hardly any women ascending to the bench (becoming judges). A fascinating look at the way in which the legal system is institutionally sexist and the impact that has on the women who pass through it. The one thing is that some descriptions were pretty vivid and relentless - probably because she is slightly desensitised and it took a while to get used to it. Kennedy points to rape as the classic example of this, however it is the chapters on abused women killing in self-defence that I felt the message had its greatest power. Women – whether criminals or victims – are still subject to the most antiquated of double standards. It is easy to understand physical differences and that is probably why the argument around self-defence has so much force; it relies on nothing more than can be observed. However, Helena Kennedy’s Eve was Framed (Vintage 1993) will show you that prejudice could be stronger than the rule of law itself, bringing injustice to someone who is “below [the law]” – to women. Precisely these arguments about 'irreparable damage to the family' have been used to counter the introduction of every piece of reforming legislation for the benefit of women in the last hundred years.

it did get a bit repetitive at points and it took on a rather informal tone but i suppose if you like that then it won't be a problem. Read this after I saw Amber Heard read it, and while it took some getting used to the extremely episodic writing style and having to pause and look up a lot of British history referenced (being American), I thought it gave excellent perspective of the challenges women face in the court system due to "feminine stereotyping"--and not JUST women since different stereotypes affect different subsets of people who all suffer if they don't fit into the established "box. Dip Into NEW PAPERBACKS [jsb_filter_by_tags count="15" show_more="10" sort_by="total_products"/] A selection of recent paperbacks. Even when the area of Law you are studying is not directly mentioned in this book, I believe it serves as a useful reminder to always think about how the law affects different societal groups.See our Remarkables Archive for some that are no longer in print, but which we are happy to try to track down. Because, honestly, we cannot argue that all men react in the same way to the same event, especially when talking about their feelings. It’s a similar story in the adult courts, where there has been a “shocking escalation in the numbers of women being sent to prison” despite the already low proportion of women committing serious offences falling over the same period.
