About this deal

One day he takes a photo he shouldn't have taken of a person who couldn't possibly be and his whole world begins to unravel. Various biographical and critical pieces by and about Herbert have been collected in James Herbert: By Horror Haunted, edited by Stephen Jones, and also in James Herbert – Devil in the Dark, written by Craig Cabell.

I could not stop myself from seeing Fenella Fielding as Laura especially when she utters the line ‘Let me breathe you, Joe. An incorporeal power has been ignited by a long-ago curse, fed and now unleashed by the evil of those who once inhabited this supposed sanctuary – and by some who still do.is an alternative history novel set in 1948 in which the Second World War ended with the release of a devastating plague by the defeated Hitler and, like The Spear, features British characters who sympathise with the Nazis. The book also manages to blend the supernatural, with the already dark and sleazy world of tabloid journalism, which is a shadowy world in its own right. Herbert has created a really 'human' main character in the paparazzo, Creed, who finds himself drawn into a sinister world. While Herbert is known primarily for his horror and fantasy novels, he has also ventured into other genres. David Ash is a parapsychologist enlisted to solve unexplained disturbances and a violent death at the deeply dark and disturbing Comraich Castle, which remains - even to David Ash - in a secret location and houses many rich and some infamous guests.

Whether it’s with the relentless violence of his pulp masterpiece The Fog, or the surprising fairy sex of 2001’s Once, readers go to Herbert in the knowledge that even in one of his lesser novels there will be sequences of outrageous entertainment to make it all worthwhile. Now, with a suitable gap of twenty-odd years, I'm getting back to where my interest in the genre started. James Herbert was one of the award winning and bestselling authors from England, who was particularly famous for writing down horror novels. For example, 'The Magic Cottage' incorporates elements of fantasy and mystery that might intrigue kids, though parental discretion is always advised due to his general preference for horror and dark fantasy. This is a proper story-telling narrative, with the author explaining things for us and injecting some brilliant humour in the process. Herbert's own interjections as the storyteller are a slightly irritating mis-step but the story is decent enough.

We were allowed half-an-hour of reading before 'lights out' at boarding school and after the assistant headmaster had roamed the corridors doing his nightly checks I whipped the boxset out and took one of the books to read. When freelance photographer Joe Creed sets out to capture a series of photos at the funeral of a famous actress, he gets the chance to take a few snaps of a strange old man at the graveside. The scene then morphs into classic 1970’s Herbert with ‘phantoms of emissions’ or ‘Semen demons’, Herbert however still keeping tongue firmly in cheek.

Herbert's work stands out in the genres of horror and fantasy due to his unique combination of these elements with mystery, romance, and thriller themes.

Herbert makes thrilling use of the image of the vampire Count Orlock from Murnau's 1922 filem Nosferatu. As is the apocalyptic climax, in which at least one of Herbert’s myriad sub-plots finally pays off in spectacular fashion. If you were to ask me if I would read any more books by James Herbert my honest answer would be, unless it was recommended to me, I would have to say no. No good will come of your investigation,'' says Nanny Tess to David Ash, paranormal investigator, in this disappointing horror tale.
