It is made using various types of agave – while Tequila is a monoculture of blue agave, mezcal uses dozens of sub-species – and a highly artisanal production method. Arette Blanco is a premium silver tequila, launched in 2007 and highly thought of on the drinks scene. It has a complex herbal character which is softened by caramel and raisin flavours and spiced up with black pepper heat.This arrangement is not meant to facilitate any improper furnishing of inducements by any manufacturer, importer, supplier, wholesaler or distributor of mezcal to any retailer of alcoholic beverages or to facilitate any improper exclusionary practices by any alcohol beverage licensee. This process helps to ensure a perfect balance between the sweet agave flavours from the cooked agave piñas and the smoke from the fire.

Ilegal Joven Mezcal is from the town of Oaxacan, Mexico made from the finest quality 100% Espadin Agave. Carriers will not leave packages containing alcohol unattended, even if you have a signature on file. Ilegal Mezcal was founded in 2006 by John Rexer, who began by smuggling this product into his Bar, Cafe No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala. Once in his bar, it didn’t take long for word to get out about this smooth and smoky spirit that was only available from the backroom at Café No Sé.This is a very nice mezcal, it really depends on the batch, with the higher batches, they have got better and it’s worth a second look. Mezcal was named Vino de Mezcal by the Spanish as it was made under specific vintage conditions with characters relating to a particular harvest. This artisan spirit is created by brothers and fourth-generation mezcaleros Armando and Alvaro Hernandez. What could have thrown off production, however, ended up a silver lining – we took swift action to identify and shift to a new partner.

The entry on the palate is mild and sweet, but it quickly heats up with cayenne pepper then shifts to sugared grapefruit. I was recently on a cruise and this was the only “Mezcal” they had so I thought what the hell let’s try it, how bad could it be? The spirit is then double-distilled and bottled at 40% ABV, resulting in a smooth and herbaceous flavour profile with notes of citrus and smoke. A carefully composed blend of sweet and smoky notes - green peppers, sooty smoke and freshly baked agave. As the smoke fades, fruity sweetness comes through - more agave and green apple, along with peppery spice, mint and eucalyptus.
