About this deal

When placed next to similar sized speaker, the warmth of the bass really shines through. Leaning towards the lower frequencies, it’s clear these speakers have been designed with DJ’s in mind. The bass is deep and punchy, creating a warm tone that will easily fill a bedroom or office. Given the speakers bass heavy EQ, the DM-40 is ideal for DJ use and listening to electronic music rather than any form of production work. According to Pioneer, the curved front edges help minimize undesirable sonic reflections and the DECO convex diffusers aid in making the sonic sweet spot as wide as possible. These solutions also make for an intriguing smart design. The DM 40s come with two-meter long audio cables, power leads, and some foam cushions that act as miniature isolation pads. The front mounted bass ports help the bass driver drop lower, moving more air as a result. Although most speakers feature a bass port, they are often found on the rear of the speaker. As a result most speakers suffer in performance if mounted close to a wall. Thankfully, Pioneer DJ have placed two ports on the front of the speaker, meaning the DM-40 is perfectly suited to being placed close to a wall. What does stand out is that Pioneer succeeded in delivering on its promise of low distortion. Even as the speakers get quite loud, there is no noticeable harshness.

According to Pioneer, this helps the DM 40 speakers achieve its impressively low-distortion at higher volumes. First Impressions / Setting Up However, they are not suited for professional applications. In the case that you enjoy or need your studio monitors to accurately represent soundscapes, then you should consider investing a little more money into your audio system. The DM 40 monitors are missing some strength and accuracy in the top end. Each speaker has 21W of power behind them – this is not a lot, but more than enough to practice your mixing skills comfortably, and casually enjoy music, movies, and games. The best part is that it has comprehensive coverage that engulfs a room. Of course, it's thanks to the diffuser that deploys the classic Pioneer DECO technology to ensure the high frequencies it produces spread across the room. As a result, you could be far away from the speaker but still hear the music it plays. However, you have to be in the same room as the speaker to listen to the song's being played. The best thing about the diffuser is that it ensures the speaker only produces clear and smooth sounds that won't be polluted by distortions, regardless of how high you increase the volume. The frontal curve edges are part of what contributes to the smooth and clear sound the speaker produces. Here’s how it works. These curved edges produce minimum resonance that’s important to creating the clear sound that the speaker makes. The DECO convex diffuser is mounted in the tweeters of the Pioneer DM 40, ensuring that the high-frequency content is distributed evenly in each direction. Our only advise regarding the speaker is to take care when handling and moving the DM-40. Because the speaker uses a soft dome tweeter and doesn’t feature speaker grills it can be easy to dent, ruining not only the look but the sound of the speaker. DM-40 Sound Quality

Max dimensions (W x D x H): Lch: 146 x 227 x 223 mm / 5.75” x 8.94” x 8.78”, Rch 146 x 227 x 212 mm / 5.75” x 8.94” x 8.35” They are not as lightweight as they may seem, but that is indeed beneficial. Many of the low-tier cabinets are made out of plastic, whereas the DM 40 speaker cabinets are made out of wood. If you plan on only practicing DJing, as well as enjoying some casual listening, then the extra punch can be seen as an engaging boost. One of them is the master speaker – it has all the inputs and volume controls, whereas the other acts as the slave speaker.Unlike what you might have heard before about budget speakers and how they sound, this budget speaker seems to raise the bar for how budget speakers should sound. For starters, beginner DJ would love the punch it produces when they play songs through it. It doesn't punch as hard as premium speakers, but I think it's simply impressive, especially for a portable budget speaker.

Ideally, you want to have dedicated floor speaker stands, if your place allows for them. Having them increases the spread of the sound image and minimizes the vibrational bleeding of the cabinets. If you are hard-pressed to invest more into your monitoring system, then you can rest assured that the DJ DM 40s will still be impressive for your DJ practice, and casual listening. We would also like to make clear that it is also entirely possible to produce music on sonically inaccurate speakers. The inputs are certainly not extensive enough to suit a variety of applications, but they cover the essential needs. In any case, adapters can be of help if one wants more options. To establish a connection with the speakers, you'll have to do it with the left speaker as it carries the necessary ports to establish the required connections. Of course, you’ll need speaker wires to establish the connection to your speaker.

Only after the volume is above 70%, one can start to notice unpleasant artifacts coming through. However, having them blast at just below that amount will be more than enough power for most casual uses. The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors.

The Bluetooth module included on the DM-40 is simply for easier casual listening. Making the DM-40 an easier speaker to live with day to day, the inclusion of Bluetooth broadens the speakers appeal. Although we regularly used the Bluetooth connection with our phones and laptop we found the physical analogue cable sounded slightly better. While one will not experience the bliss of intricate sonic details, the overall good quality is impressive at such a low price. Pioneer DM 40: The Final Verdict This 2-way active speaker has an AB amplifier embedded in the left speaker. You’ll also find connections and controls for the speaker on the left speaker. One limitation to this speaker is that you can't swap which speaker functions as a left or right speaker. If you want a flexible speaker placement, you can achieve it with the available audio connections and how long your power cable is.
