About this deal

Barratt is a confectionery brand in the United Kingdom, known for products including DipDab, Refreshers, Sherbet Fountain, Fruit Salad, Black Jack and Wham. What I find really annoying is the fact that I can only seem to find my beloved old Fruit Salad chews as a mixture with Black Jacks. one day, a girl in my class had a party and handed out sweets, including black jacks, she reminde us that we was allowed to eat them unitl the end of day, well, I decided that i was giong to go in the toilet and eat the blackjacks, a girl in my class came into toilets and whilst i was talking to her she screeched:"Your tongue is black, you been eating blackjacks", I tried to wash the black of my tongue but of couurse, it did not come off, i spent the rest of the day with my mouth shut! Four for a penny, Blackjacks were little chewy sweets wrapped in greaseproof black and white paper wrappings and a favourite for the old mixed-bag selection.

Later it included Almond Rock, Brandy Snaps, Stickjaw, Coffee Almonds, Brandy Nips, Ching Chang Marbles and Coker Tines. Often partnered with Fruit Salad, this tub of Candyland Black Jack sweets ensures that it’s aniseed all the way. Farthings had just gone(at the end of 1960) out but it was still four black jacks or four fruit salad for a penny - a real penny that is, 1d not 1p. Two years later there were around 2,000 employees producing 350 tonnes of sweets a week, making Barratts the largest confectionery manufacturer in the world. From best-loved flavours like sherbet Dip Dap to Wham bar lollies, you’ll find a new twist on sweet classics here – alongside amazing offers and deals you’ll only find here. Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Palm Oil, Colour (Vegetable Carbon), Hydrolysed Pea Protein, Acid (Citric Acid), Aniseed Oil, Acidity Regulator (Trisodium Citrate). The Panel also noted that ‘schnapps’ was in relatively large font and featured directly beneath the brand name. the word ‘schnapps’ appeared twice on the front label, once directly below the ‘Cactus Jack’s’ main brand name, in 7mm font, and in the same font colour as the brand name. Following Barratt's death in 1906 his eldest son, George William (1851-1928), took over as chairman.

In the 1880s came Yankee Panky (a low-boiled sweet wrapped in wax paper – an industry first), Rose Pastilles and Refresher Sticks. The sherbet was contained in a paper-wrapped cardboard tube with a liquorice “straw” stuck in the top.Glucose syrup, Sugar, Water, Palm oil, Colour (Vegetable Carbon), Beef gelatine, Acid (Citric Acid), Emulsifier (Soya lecithin), Aniseed oil, Spirulina concentrate. When the company outgrew its Hoxton site it moved to a former piano factory, owned by a Mr Ivory, on Mayes Road, Wood Green, north of London. Bounded by Coburg Road, Mayes Road and Western Road, the site has since been occupied by The Chocolate Factory. By 1904 eight buildings were in use on nearly 5 acres, despite the setback of a serious fire on 18 October 1899 in which five buildings were destroyed.
