About this deal

Simply add a little water to your Graphitint sketch and a hint of colour in your sketch becomes a rich, vibrant colour. This set however only has 24, but the colours are so gorgeous and even the names given to the colours will push your inspiration along. The fine graphite particles in the paint will settle into the paper grain - a texture that can be used to capture a myriad of effects.

Storm, Russet, Warm Grey, Slate Green, Chestnut, Cocoa, Port, Juniper, Meadow, Green Gray, Steel Blue, Sage, Cool Brown, Cloud Grey, Cool Grey, Midnight Black, Ocean Blue, Shadow, Mountain Grey, Dark Indigo, Aubergine, Autumn Brown, Ivy and White. This is more noticeable than in the pencils, where the dry pencil has a subtle shimmer but the wet areas of colour are a lot less metallic-looking. If used dry they produce grey shadings with subdued hues but just add water and the colours become bolder and richer. Used dry, Graphitint provides just a hint of colour but adding water literally transforms the tint into rich, vibrant colour.Lightfastness is a very important factor for all artists, including coloured pencil artists, Derwent seem to take this matter very seriously and have certainly done an excellent job with the Graphitint range. Protecting your portrait upon completion can be achieved by using a fixative spray and I may do a window test with this painting to check the lightfastness of the colours. We still make our pencils in the place where graphite was discovered in England’s Lake District and we haven’t stopped pushing the boundaries of pencil making since.

To soften these lines I used a thinner bristled paintbrush to carefully wipe over the lines but avoided over-saturation so as not to lighten the colours to much. The Derwent Graphitint Paint Pan Set includes 12 pans of water-soluble paint made from a unique blend of graphite with colour. The colours are not vibrant like the Inktense ones but each colour has a graphite undertone hence the 'Graphitint' title. This set comes in small, durable plastic case - ideally sized for travel - and includes a mini waterbrush, a sponge and five mixing palettes. The pencils themselves are well proportioned with an amble 8mm, excellent quality, Cedar wood barrel. Derwent Graphitint Pencils have the same properties in terms of hardness and solubility in water as Derwent's popular 4B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil, so you can experiment with adding colour but retain all the familiar qualities of your favourite graphite pencil. In the 24 set of Derwent Graphitint, 19 of them are rated 6 and above, which is an excellent ratio in my opinion. Available in 24 or 12 fabulous colour tints from soft greys, blues and greens to glowing russets, plums and browns.

Derwent range their products on a scale of 0-8 for lightfastness, with 6 and above being considered very lightfast. You will find the donation buttons below and can follow us on ko-fi to stay informed of the latest news. The extendable front plate has a self feeding mechanism which stops when the pencil has reached a superb point.

As you can see with the dark tips of the wings that being too heavy handed with water application can cause excessive 'bleeding' leaving harsh edges between colours so it is best to keep your brush clean whilst softening the transition to avoid muddying the colours. A few years ago I purchased a tin of Derwent Graphitint pencils being a fan of graphite pencils I thought it was such a great concept to add a hint of colour to my graphite drawings using these pencils.

So to answer the questions at the beginning of this review, Are you likely to use them on a painting? If the idea of graphite and colour in one pencil is surprising, just wait until you add water to Derwent Graphitint and it explodes into colour! My review today focuses on the popular Derwent Graphitint range, the range is relatively small in numbers, however the colours are to die for and unsurpassed by many other watersoluable pencils on the market; but are they worth the investment? size brush for the application of water and ensured I applied water carefully and followed the direction of the lines and shape of the butterfly to avoid leaving any unnecessary marks. A specially selected assortment of brushes for different painting techniques; each brush in this set has been developed to produce different marks, allowing the artist greater creative possibilities.p>
