I can't remember reading too much about Beowulf. Essentially because this annoying feeling I have towards poems. So, yeah, I wouldn't dare to read the original translated poem and that's the reason why I chose this little one as a starting point. It's a retelling and it's beautifully written. And even though I would like to put it under the "Norse" label and get on with it, it isn't. Supposedly because Old Norse literary tradition doesn't begin until the 12th century in Iceland and the Beowulf manuscript was produced between 975 and 1025. Having said this, it would fall under the "Germanic" category as far as I can tell. ⠀

Beowulf is just a normal warrior who is str ong and likes to help the k ing Hrothgar and his people – who w ere being terrorised by a horrible monster called Grendel and his gruesome mother. Beowulf knows he is putting his life in danger but is still willing to do what he has to do to save the people . Classic fiction, narrative poetry, Denmark, Old English, monsters, dragons, bravery, intrigue, betrayal, loyaltyaggressive, ancient, cemetery, committee, community, desperate, disastrous, exaggerate, explanation, sincerely Spelling Rules and Patterns Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown. Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. Some off the illustrations are still running around in my head. I would recommend this to boys age 10+ . I loved Beowulf it’s a great book – you would definitely like it ! This is a 3 week + Writing Root using Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman where children get an opportunity to discuss legends and the importance of heroic poetry in early European literature. They go on to create a number of varied written outcomes using the text as a starting point including recounts, formal letters, dialogue, descriptions, obituaries and writing their own epic, heroic narrative using various poetic devices. References will be made to the original manuscript throughout. Synopsis of Text:

Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. My favourite character was Wiglat h because he was loyal to his king and he didn’t run away whe n he needed them the most. He was extremely brave! I liked the book , it was so good – I want to read it again and again ! I could really imagine I was Beowulf , saving lives and protecting the inn ocent from ferocious monsters!A unit of work (37 lessons - up to 50 hours of lessons ) for Year 5-6 pupils. Ideal for schools studying the Vikings/Anglo Saxons under the new curriculum. A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books at festivals, concerts and theatres.
