While I read this novella, I had a gentle smile on my face for most of it. I wanted to hug it and pet it and gently scritch it under its chin. I wanted to sit quietly with it and watch it experience the world and muse about its questions. It makes me feel hopeful. It’s comfort reading but more. I don’t know if there will be more “Monk and Robot” stories. But I would happily read them. A I love the wonderful world they live in. An optimistic, utopian type society where even the young are taught goodness and kindness. Ah, it was so heartwarming. I loved seeing Mosscap explore everything for the first time like a child! This maxim is a tough pill to swallow, as much for Dex as it is for anyone in our world. If you are good at something, is it wrong to not utilize those skills for others? If we are all responsible for the needs of the community, what do we do when our needs and the needs of others don’t align? In A Prayer for the Crown Shy, Chambers explains the world in more detail. Since Sibling Dex and Mosscap are more familiar with each other, there’s a bit more room for development of the world and their relationship. And all the nitty gritty world elements – like how money and bartering work – I ended up loving. It’s unique and thought provoking from the littlest to the largest ways. These elements examine what our economics says about our values and communities. How we relate to others in the world and what our ‘value’ is. Can you tell how much I loved this thought kernel??

Mosscap gave Dex a sympathetic nod. The hard climb to Hart’s Brow was more than a week behind them, but Dex’s body was still feeling it, and they had made no secret of this. “On that note, Sibling Dex,” Mosscap said, “I can’t help but notice that the sign says it’s another twenty miles to Stump, and—”

Review

After touring the rural areas of Panga, Sibling Dex (a Tea Monk of some renown) and Mosscap (a robot sent on a quest to determine what humanity really needs) turn their attention to the villages and cities of the little moon they call home.
