Chances are, this year’s birthday is no different. And, if you have a toddler or a Sesame Street fan, I think you’re ready to try your hand at one of these Elmo cake ideas. This Elmo cake-cupcake hybrid looks incredible. The bright red shade really makes the cake come alive. The beautiful pipe frosting makes it look almost too good to eat. 18. Hand-sculpted Elmo Cake Topper Whole Milk & Sour Cream: Whole milk and sour cream are strongly recommended for the best taste and texture. A full fat plain yogurt would work instead, though the cake may not be as light. Same goes with a lower fat milk. I love this cute little idea! The side’s ombre effect is a nice touch and a great way to hide any mishaps. Elmo is actually piped on with icing rather than modeled from chocolate or a plastic figure. So, it might test your drawing skills, but the result should be fun either way! Other Sesame Street Characters to Consider

The best part about Sesame Street is its wide cast of beloved fuzzy characters – not just Elmo. Besides being tantalizingly adorable, all these characters are also quite hilarious and boast varying traits that make them endearing. You can feature any of these friends alongside Elmo on your cake! White Chocolate: Use real white chocolate to coat Elmo’s eyes and nose. You can use high quality white chocolate chips if needed (I prefer Ghirardelli brand), but I recommend using pure chocolate baking bars. You can find them right next to the chocolate chips in the baking aisle. They are sold in 4 ounce bars. I like Bakers or Ghirardelli brands. You can also use 8 ounces of candy melts.

20. Elmo Cake Pops

If you plan on having other desserts besides the main cake, decrease the size of the cakes you bake accordingly. Also, consider getting several disposable take-home boxes you can fill with leftover cake and desserts. You won’t be left with a mountain of extra cake, and your guests will have an extra treat to take with them! Elmo Loves You! Best For Kids: Tiered Buttercream Cake: This cake idea proves you only need Elmo’s face and a few other elements to blow any kid’s mind. Thank you all, the cake decorators, for sharing your amazing creations! Suggested Tutorials (I haven’t personally tried all of these tutorials but I think they may be helpful) This CUTE cake is by Jadie’s Cakes. The colors really mesh very well and the pearls at the bottom is a great finishing touch. Did you see the little cookie in the Cookie Monster’s mouth?? Colorful First Birthday Sesame Street Cake If you opt to make the smiling face out of buttercream or fondant, expect it to take you a while. That’s particularly true if you’re new to baking and decorating themed cakes.

Can’t say enough about how much I learned. This cake gave me confidence for future character themed cakes! Something all moms of little ones need. Thanks, Sally! Meanwhile, shape Elmo’s eyes and nose: Crumble the pieces of cake that you leveled off into crumbs. I just use my hands for this. Stir in 1 Tablespoon of white frosting. If the mixture still seems pretty crumby and dry, add a little more of the white frosting until you have a moist mixture that you can form into shapes. Mixture shouldn’t be overly wet. Form into 3 shapes: two 2-inch discs for Elmo’s eyes and one 3-inch oval/egg shape for Elmo’s nose. Smooth them out as best you can. Place on a lined baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator or freezer for at least 30 minutes to set. Once they’re set, you can smooth out any bumps on the surface with your hands if needed. The photographer did not get pics of the fondant faces that were on the sides of the cake and I didn’t get a chance to take pics. So bummed. However, I had fun making my very first cake decorating cake even though it looks NOTHING like the inspiration picture! It is fine because I already was bitten by the cake decorating bug! Make Elmo’s Eyes & Nose: Remember the cake tops you leveled off? Crumble them up cake pops style. Mix with a little frosting and form into 2 circles for Elmo’s eyes and an oval or egg shape for his nose. Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes. Melt white chocolate (or even candy melts), then coat the eyes. Tint the remaining white chocolate orange (gel food coloring is best), and coat the nose. Chill until the coating has set. I could not find the original source of this picture, so if you know who made this, please let me know in the comments. I just loved this design because it has so many colors and characters. I also really liked the nameplate! Read through the full directions and watch the video tutorial below before beginning. If you wish to make the cake ahead of time, read my Make-Ahead Instructions below before beginning.

Made this cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. It looked picture perfect. Such a great addition to his Sesame Street themed party. He loved it, I loved making it! I didn’t have time to do a test run and only started making it the morning before the noon party. I’ve made a few other layer cakes with Sally’s recipes, so I guess that was the bit of practice I needed. Here are my notes: Elmo was my daughter’s favorite little red monster. Cake pops are great for birthdays because it’s cake the kids can hold while playing. I even whip up cake pops on the weekend for yummy treats. They’re super easy to make and fun to eat! 21. Vanilla Buttercream Elmo Cake

Before you frost anything, put the frosting in your bags and then in the fridge for awhile. Then, use your hands to get it to the right temp for application. If the frosting in you bag is too melty or the frosting is running off the side of the cake, toss the frosting bag and cake in the fridge and let it firm up! Helped so much! Instead of fondant, this cake idea shows you what a great design coupled with buttercream frosting skills can achieve. It’s all about your creativity and the ideas you’d like to bring to life. Let the whole thing showcase Elmo’s adorable face. He is the star of the party, so let him shine. 5. Tiered Elmo Cake Start preheating your oven now because these 22 Elmo cake ideas are sure to amaze. I tried to choose various easy to hard ideas for bakers of all experience levels, plus ones that would appeal to girls and boys. 1. Elmo Smash Cake Clean & Simple Design by Jessica Harris – You learn how to apply the stripes using a wax paper transfer method. I’ve personally taken her classes and love her classes. Level the Cakes: The baked cakes will have a slight dome, so carefully level them off with a cake leveler or serrated knife. Save the scraps for Elmo’s eyes and nose.
