About this deal

The Ranger 3L Water Pant kept me dry in some of the worst conditions I’ve ever ridden in. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Fox Ranger 3L Water Pants performance

Fox clothing is known as one of the most stylish brands on the market, and its current outerwear collection enhances this quality with some serious technical know-how, whatever the weather throws at you. This off-the-bike fitness challenge will help refine essential MTB skills and seriously boost your power This 100% waterproof trouser uses a 2.5-layer fabric with a little bit of stretch and is rated 10k for both breathability and waterproofness. While it’s true that other quality riding trousers with a DWR coating that keep you dry-ish in less severe conditions can be had for half the money, the Hydromatics are priced in line with other fully winterised equivalents. As such, they are genuinely waterproof and can handle full days in horrible conditions. At Chain Reaction Cycles we found 283 products from Fox Racing, of which 10 were in the Pants – Cycle category.

Fire

We then wanted to get a bit more specific and only look at Fox Racing products that are listed in the Pants – Cycle category. Seams are an obvious weak point in any waterproof fabric, so they are often sealed and taped internally to try to stop water getting in.

All waterproof fabrics are rated for waterproofness and anything over 10,000mm is pretty watertight in normal conditions. Breathability is also rated – look for the MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) figure. Above 20,000g/m²/24hr means good breathability. Fabric construction You might not be able to tell from the pictures but the Fox Ranger 3L Water Pant doesn’t have that typical nylon trouser construction, it’s more of a soft shell. The face fabric contains a high percentage of Spandex, which means it has a four-way stretch ability, is less noisy and, in our opinion, way more comfortable. They also work well with knee pads, and although the tapered legs are quite snug, I managed to get bulky downhill-style pads underneath without any fuss.

Taking more of a traditional fit, these pants offer some serious poor weather protection with great breathability.

Ideally, you’ll want a snug but non-restrictive fit: too loose and you could risk the trousers sagging; too tight and they’ll be uncomfortable or restrictive. Look out for elastane blend materials to help give extra stretch, and make sure there’s plenty of room for you to wear knee pads underneath too. Reading between the lines you’ll see that Fox only states the Ranger Water pant to be water-resistant and not waterproof, but this isn’t obvious when out in downright terrible conditions, and these trousers do a stellar job of rejecting the rain and keeping you dry. Keeping those elements out is a lightweight three-layer construction that sports well-rounded waterproof, windproof and breathable traits. It’s not got the same waterproofing longevity as the Endura or Patagonia options but it’s decent enough for the majority of wet riding. We did, however, find the ratchet waist adjustment to be one of the best and most reliable systems out there. s Thunder Pants are one of the best waterproof MTB pants available if your riding regime is as regular in winter as it is in summer. As for sizing, try before you buy, because the waist sizes up quite large and adjustment is limited. This 100% waterproof trouser uses a 2.5-layer fabric with a little bit of stretch and is rated 10k for both breathability and waterproofness. While it’s true that other quality riding trousers with a DWR coating that keep you dry-ish in less severe conditions can be had for half the money, the Hydromatics are priced in line with other fully winterised equivalents. While Rapha might be a brand more often associated with road cycling, its trail mountain bike range is impressive, and we found these offered comparable performance to the Troy Lee Skyline trousers during testing. My 73kg, 178cm frame was best-suited to the 30in size Ranger, and offered a snug and comfortable fit with plenty of scope to adjust the waist via the ratchet strap. The first thing is material. Looking at what Fox Racing Ranger 3L Water Trousers is made of will give you a really good idea of the quality overall. Take a look at the specs above and you should be able to see the material. It’s then up to you to decide if it meets your expectation.
