About this deal

In all, the software is useful and easy to use – after you figure out what its various icons mean. It provides a preview of your lighting customizations so you can get them set up right on the first try. I enjoyed the many different color effects it offers, but gamers will likely find the Zones the most useful, where you can customize different zones on the keyboard, from the WASD and arrow keys to function and modifier keys. Logitech G512 – Gaming The 512 SE’s function keys double as media and lighting controls, via the toggled FN key. These keys offer standard audio controls in addition to user-defined commands, which can be defined in the G-HUB suite. LIGHTSYNC RGB The keyboard itself feels bombproof, with the aluminium chassis and rigid moulded-plastic underside combining to create a durable and sturdy construction. Even the non-slip risers, which are often a weak point for any keyboard, are deep-set and wide, providing a stable and reliable footing. We tested with the GX Blue switches (Logitech’s answer to the Cherry MX Blue) and were blown away by their quality and reliability. The key activation is flawless, even during flurries of MMO madness, and their firm and tactile feel is hugely pleasing. The wired (and non-braided) connection may be an issue for some, and because of the USB-passthrough, the keyboard will take up two USB-ports. Of course, there’s always the option to not link up the passthrough to save a precious port. Gamers: seriously consider the Logitech 512 SE as your next keyboard. It’s hard to beat.

The keycaps have a soft, smooth finish, and their concave top surface made it easy for my fingers to land in the center of each key. Key spacing felt spot on; I needed no time to adjust to the G512’s layout and was typing comfortably and accurately as soon as I took it out of the box. Unlike with the pricier G513, the G512 Carbon does not include any replacement keycaps. Logitech G512 – Software Logitech follows the standard keyboard design for the G512 Carbon; there are no extras for media control or a volume dial. The keyboard’s row of function keys double as media controls and let you change the keyboard’s lighting effects. The RGB lighting looks great, but the only bummer about the design is the secondary functions of keys do not light up as they do on the G513 model. It’s just looks better when the secondary functions are illuminated, and it can also makes it a lot easier to use them when gaming in the dark. The Logitech’s G512 SE chassis is formed of a brushed aluminium alloy which provides the unit a mature and understated look, radiating a minimalistic aesthetic that is sure to impress. In addition to looking good, the alloy provides a firm and sturdy frame – there’s no bounce here. MECHANICAL KEYS Logitech’s Gaming Software lets you use Logitech’s LIGHTSYNC functionality to sync the keyboard’s RGB lighting to other Logitech peripherals. The software also lets you record macros and disable additional keys for Game Mode, so you don’t accidentally hit unwanted keys during certain games. You can save your profiles and settings to the keyboard’s onboard memory. There are default game-specific keyboard configurations available for popular titles which dim all but the game’s specifically used keys and reacts to in-game events. In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, for example, the player’s death and time-out will be accompanied by pulsating red illumination, until respawn. User-defined profiles are a real gift, allowing gamers to get a handle on their in-game experience. We took advantage of the key-specific illumination and game mode key-deactivation to customise our Witcher 3 layout. These profiles operate across peripherals devices, allowing mouse-sensitivity and button-bindings to also synchronise. The meat of the software is customizing the RGB lighting. You can choose colors on a per-key basis or select from a number of cool presets. There’s an awesome Contrastic effect that gives a different color to the row function keys and the keys between the regular keys and number pad. I also like the colorful BleepBoop effect and the Matrix-esque Datafall effect that defaults, of course, to green. You can create your own effects, but it’s easier to just take a preset you like and edit it. Logitech’s LIGHTSYNC provides 16.8 million programmable colours, which when combined with the 512 keyboard’s per-key illumination offers up remarkable customisation potential. Via G-HUB, colours can be sampled from the screen, used as an audio-visualiser or set to an array of animated or static profiles. Colour profiles and effects can be synchronised across all devices in the LIGHTSYNC ecosystem to create a unified and immersive gaming experience.
