This is where pro golfers really shine. They can strike the golf ball first (in an optimal position on the clubface), and then their club will interact with the turf. If you see the practice area of any PGA Tour professional, you’ll see a neat arrangement of divot patterns after their session is complete. While the direction is important, don’t forget about the depth of the divot as well. While you won’t actually take any turf with you on this training aid, you can still get a good idea of the depth. Typically, players get away with striking behind the ball on a range mat (as it just bounces up and gives the player a false-sense of competence). However, when using the Divot Board, even though a fat shot is more forgiving than on grass, you’re going to see your error visually. Anytime I watch golf, I always get a little mesmerized (and jealous!) of the way pro players can spin their shots. Not only are they talented enough to put English on the ball, but they do so with such precision that it’s executed to perfection — usually leaving them within a couple of feet of the pin. Once you swing a few times, you will likely start to notice tendencies in your game. As you know in golf, old habits die hard.

After completing my round, I did what every golf-obsessed person does: Practiced chipping and putting. Once you’re in a good setup, take a normal swing as if you’re hitting a real golf ball. Don’t focus on the board, act as if you’re hitting a ball on the range or course. But once in a while, something comes out that grabs my full attention. More so than 99% of the other inventions I’ve seen come and go over the years. A good divot should take about one inch down of the grass and about the width of a slice of bacon. If it’s deeper than that, chances are you’re going to hit it fat and end up way short. Since I started Practical Golf, I have tested hundreds of products in almost every category imaginable. Because my time is limited, I’ve said no to hundreds more. Most of my “no’s” are for training aid inventions that continue to flood the market. Despite the inventor’s best interests, most of them are junk and will not help you become a better golfer. Golfers will try just about anything that promises to improve their game. Last but not least, I spoke to several people who have used the Acu-Strike over the long term. Almost all of them told me about durability issues. One golfer who had a much steeper swing told me that the Acu-Strike’s surface ripped after 100 shots.

So how “deep” should your divot be? I once had a coach say , “Your divots should look like a thin strip of bacon.”Unfortunately, we don’t always get to practice on real grass and see what story the divot actually tells. A lot of golfers have to practice indoors or outside on mats, especially during winter months.

If you are at the range or home, the Divot Board may be a similar height to the mat. So if room permits, you could place it adjacent to the mat. That being said, I did not notice any major difference in my impact patterns whether I was hitting off a level surface or used the Divot Board slighting above my stance. There are a couple of potential workarounds you could create: When looking down at the board, you will start to do anything you can with your golf game to try and get those perfect smooth marks of the club. Seeing a club path that goes outside in or inside out can be frustrating and will require you to make swing adjustments. If it’s straight, great job, you just hit one of the hardest shots in golf… a straight one! But you still want to make sure the face is square at impact, otherwise it’ll be a straight ball flight but have a fade or draw.

Analyze Your Divot: Understanding your divot is crucial for identifying swing flaws. Our system helps you read your divot and make necessary corrections. If you push the golf ball, your divot will be to the right of your target. Just like the other example, the face at impact will determine if it’s a push cut, straight push, or push draw. If you watch golf on TV, I’m sure you’ve seen this when they use the slow motion camera to illustrate the point. A player will hit the ball, then the grass, leaving the divot well ahead of the ball. Most training aids are swing trainers (if that makes sense). The more popular products that I’ve used, such as The Orange Whip, DST Trainer, and SuperSpeed Golf, are trying to get you to make some specific change in your golf swing with the way the product is designed. I also noticed that the Acu-Strike’s bottom surface does not “cling” to the mat. They do offer a velcro attachment, but I felt that didn’t keep in place nearly as well as the Divot Board’s bottom.If you pull the golf ball, your divot will be to the left of the target. The face will determine if it’s a pull draw, straight pull, or pull cut. Another word that’s commonly used to describe the skill is called low-point control. To be clear, turf interaction and low point control are not the same but related.
