About this deal

Whoever Venti was, he was either rich or knew someone with money. Staying in the city center was expensive, and Liuli Pavilion was particularly upscale. Venti didn’t look like a wealthy person. He was a foreigner, so maybe he just wore it differently. I could go on and on, but it's like every paragraph is filled with the most heartbreaking and truth-filled sentences, and it's not easy to read. It feels far scarier to read this than any horror book I've ever read, because this is about a real-life horror, a real-life monster. It sheds light on the abuser's traumatic past without ever excusing his actions, and it does not portray victims as weak or in need of saving. Leighton is one of the strongest protagonists I've ever read about, and there are a lot of admirable qualities in her, without her being perfect. It does a fantastic job of showing how many bad or negligent people there are in this world, but also showing how many kind and brilliant people you will meet as well. Every part of this book is amazing, and I cannot wait for Kyrie McCauley's future works. Kyrie McCauley in her author's note explained that she experienced domestic violence as a teenager and wrote If These Wings Could Fly "so that those who never experienced it might better understand the complexity of domestic violence." Sabo shot him a droll look as he breathed shallowly, his ribs still hurting “I don't have callouses anymore.” he explained bitterly, tightening his hands into fists as he passed the cook “And I'd much rather start working on acquiring them in a more controlled setting.” Gut-wrenching, magnificent...familiar. Just a few words to describe Kyrie McCauley's IF THESE WINGS COULD FLY. This book follows Leighton and her two younger sisters as they live through an abusive father and their complacent mother. It's Leighton's last year of high school, so she grapples with escaping her house for college, as well as the guilt of leaving her two sisters behind in a house that seems to fall apart around them. Amidst all of this, a strange influx of crows begins to appear in the town. As the boiling pot of her home begins to pour over, the population of crows soars, almost coincidentally. Woven together, we see a small town that turns a blind eye to those in need; children caught in the realization that their father could finally tip past the breaking point at any moment and destroy their lives forever.

Sabo swallowed, his resolve, what little was left of it, steeling for the first time in a long while “They're fine. They have to be. If there's anything in this world I can believe in, it's the fact that they're free and soon enough both of them will be sailing. We promised to set sail at 17 and while I may be a couple years late, I'm at sea. Now I'll just... have to start looking for a place to be, I guess.”

Wings Lyrics

I did nothing, he was already injured when I took him!” the man who'd thrown him over his shoulder protested, sounding very affronted.

As you can probably tell, there are a lot of trigger warnings/other content warnings in this book. I love all of you and I want you to feel safe and cared for so I’ll list them below:The book spans four months — the first chapter begins on September 2nd and the final chapter begins on January 1st. Some favorite quotes: This story is so beautiful, and heavy, and tragic. There is something so delicate in this story, yet with a bite underneath. It's like angry crying, release when there's nothing you can do but let go and howl. I don't know how McCauley manages to balance so much heft and righteous anger with the soft story of sisterhood, grief, and refinding your self after drowning, but she nails it exactly.

Ma a casa mia ho imparato che se una faccia della medaglia è il principe azzurro,il rovescio è tutt'altro che fiabesco"... A deep dive to illustrate the quiet strength of those in the darkest situations, If These Wings Could Fly is atmospheric, brilliantly drawn, and ultimately hopeful.” -- Mindy McGinnis, author of The Female of the SpeciesHe wasn't sure how long he could live like this. He had no idea if Ace or Luffy had even survived the fire and his father was just lying to him, or if Ace truly had left the island when he turned 17 and Luffy was biding his time until his own birthday came. He could only hope, but without any access to newspapers with bounty posters, Sabo was in the dark. All he had was a calendar and some vague rumors of a pirate that might be Ace, but he couldn't be sure. 'Spade' sounded like something Ace might come up with, but he never could get the names of the members of the crew. And even then, he was pretty sure the crew had either disappeared or disbanded. THE HUB: The image of the house healing itself is so unique and one of several powerful metaphors throughout. What made the house so central to your storytelling process?
