About this deal

There was lots of humour that did actually make me laugh/smile at times (and then despair of myself in the case of some of the puns).

Also, there were some words that stood out to me in the quesi-historical fantasy setting, such as referring to a vest top as a 'tank' or repeated use of the word 'vacation.I found the relationship to be frustrating and more often than not felt like I was being told things, not shown things. there were the recurring themes of both Key and Rain not feeling like they were enough for the other, which then became a mini drama, which was then resolved within the same paragraph. It started out great in the first couple of chapters, but I really lost interest and found myself skimming, hoping for something to grab me.

The lands in general and the specific town of Tawney made for an interesting setting with good world building. Kianthe and Reyna are wonderfully flawed characters, but their communication and coping skills with each other is so beautiful. The politics, court intrigue, dragons, magic -- it was definitely an adventure fantasy served with a side of cozy. Together with their loyal animal companions they start a new life in Tawney, a tiny town filled with lovable people. Kianthe and Reyna are such characters, and their interactions are full of wholesome love (and terrible puns) and I love every second of it.Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea is described as "a gorgeous heart-warmer of a book, filled with cosy adventure, sapphic romance and good feelings.

is sort of brushed off with a "well, we'll look more into that later," not even afforded a proper cliff-hanger. This story is also slightly more tense, and we get a possible mystery involving dragon eggs which makes for far reaching consequences, which I’m sure will come to fruition in the rest of the series. Meanwhile, Kianthe has been waiting for a chance to flee responsibility–all the better that her girlfriend is on board. Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne is a gorgeous treat of a book, filled with cosy adventure, sapphic romance and good feelings. When they first started dating, Kianthe had never considered the little tactics Reyna often employed: separating from impulse, practicing empathy, repeating another's sentence to prove she'd been listening. The delicious combination of peril, romance and tea (you can never have enough tea…) was bewitching in the best possible way.

It also ends on a little epilogue which promises new as well as our main characters, and surely more shenanigans. and you just invent the concept of libraries in a single conversation (also, does the magic school NOT have libraries already? I didn’t know going into it that it was going to be a series but I’m definitely excited to continue. The similarities in the vibes are very strong but the author still manages to give the feel of a very different world, slightly darker in tone, lots of tasty tea - but ofcourse the delicious baked goods still remain and I totally couldn’t have done without them. There's also a lack of solid worldbuilding, and as other reviews have pointed out the book isn't really a "cosy fantasy".All in all, I still mostly enjoyed this, and anyone looking for a cozy fantasy with a little bit more plot/stakes probably will as well. there's no development of any of their relationships, so there's no way for the readers to form a bond with them either.
