About this deal

The main issue is that often the people who do take a stand are the rich and famous and it’s very hard for the general public to empathise. The song "Starz in their Eyes" by Just Jack criticizes the culture of celebrity and the desire for fame. In the first verse, the lyrics suggest that once someone becomes famous ("VIPerson"), their problems worsen and their paranoia grows. The whole song is a masterpiece filled with sentiments of the rise and fall of fame; the quick highs followed by the crushing lows.

It does seem that everything is magnified for those cursed with fame; every mistake is chewed over by the masses and their life and work comes under constant criticism, I certainly wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. With lines such as ‘It’s a long way to come from the Dog and Duck karaoke machine’ and ’It’s a long way to come from your private bedroom dance routines’ being sung in a cheeky cockney accent, the song relates back to us; I think this does much more to help us understand. The song title is taken from British TV talent show Stars in Their Eyes which ran between 1990 and 2006. He’s played and recorded with a crazy list of legends including Whitney Houston, Richard Ashcroft, Cher, Maxi Priest and Tina Turner. However, upon stopping, the sudden change from three decades of constant work and pressure to an abundance of free time turned the star to alcohol and very nearly caused an untimely demise. Yes, they get paid up to a point, but there is little concern for the mental pressure that is put on largely unprepared youngsters who are suddenly thrust into the media meat grinder. Whilst I could pick out more of the lyrics to dissect they all tend to suggest the same two things; that fame isn’t what it's cracked up to be and that the industry uses and abuses talent.

Jay Reynolds, who produced the whole of Overtones, then worked tirelessly, tweaking, editing, honing, even re-recording the drums, to get the best out of this tune. But… Although I loved what we had done, I began feeling that it sounded too much like a straight ahead disco-y indie pop song. In the second bridge, the lyrics delve into the artificial and shallow nature of the entertainment industry.I’m just happy my most well known song has a real and enduring message, and a bit of timelessness in the production. I think we have all seen in the past when a star emerges set to be the next best thing, only to disappear after a short while into thin air. What I had now was a song with two separate big choruses to alternate between, which I think explains at least some of it’s success. Starz in their Eyes” attacks talent shows and ‘get famous quick’ schemes which abuse the contestants and then drop them at a moment’s notice when they quickly become irrelevant. I went from being a low key, left of centre, bedroom producing, rapper/singer/stoner, to being on Top Of The Pops, and Conan O’Brien in NYC, and countless other places I would never have expected.

It’s often been publicised by artists in songs or autobiographies that the glitz and the glamour is not as exciting as we have been led to believe, and you just need to glance at the tragic list of celebrities who have turned to drugs and alcohol and the infamous 27 club that is often a result of such abuse and turmoil to see this. I’d written half the rap lyrics a while before for something else, and I added some more to make it all fit with the rest of the song. The chorus questions why someone would want to put "starz in their eyes," implying that seeking fame leads to negative consequences.

The bridge emphasizes the contrast between a humble beginning and the superficiality of fame, using the imagery of a small karaoke machine at a local pub versus the extravagant dreams associated with stardom.
