About this deal

We’ve also purposefully not labeled any of the images here. Can you tell which photos were shot with which lens? We will reveal this later in the article. Overall, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is excellent for professional photographers specializing in both indoor and outdoor portrait photography. Sigma falls behind when you consider the size and weight of the lens. It delivers exceptional image quality, ultrasonic focus, and fantastic performance at f/1.4.

Without the hood, the Sigma is only a little longer than the Sony at 11cm /4.5” compared to 9.5cm/3.5” of the Sony (the Sigma’s hood is significantly larger and longer however so the lens will appear bigger when you are using it). Rings Sunstars have never been high on Sigma’s priority list and the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 is no exception. The eleven not perfectly aligned aperture blades result in rather fuzzy sunstars with 22 rays. This is a portrait lens though, so complaining about sunstars is a bit unfair. Coma As for the image quality. Both lenses are soft up to at least f/2.8 in the center and we would even consider closing down to f/4 or more if you have the option. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art replaced the Viltrox 1.8/85 in my camera bag. The Sigma traveled with me through the alps and always finds its way into my camera bag whenever I go outside. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is made from high quality plastics and features a brass lens mount. Around the lens mount a rubber gasket can be found, Sigma claims the lens to be dust and weather proof. One area where the Sony has a huge disadvantage is CA. Wide-open this is very prominent and this is one of the worst-performing lenses we have ever tested in this aspect with tones of purple and green fringing. Based on our tests it seems that the focus of the Sigma is at least as good as that of the Sony 85mm f/1.8. We tested focus both in still and video (including the touch feature on the monitor of our A7R IV) and we can’t really see any advantage for the Sony. We also used the Sigma at f/1.4 for all of our intro/outro LensVid videos in the past few months and it worked very well. Sharpness

Also, when Sigma “goes for broke”, and creates a lens like their DSLR f/1.4 primes, or their Sony E-mount 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art, the results are, well, massive. Because of this, I was fully prepared for an obnoxiously big and heavy 85mm f/1.2 prime, or even an oversized 85mm f/1.4 prime. The Sony corner sharpness – top left (f/1.8), top right (f/2.8), bottom, left (f/4), bottom right (f/8) Honestly? If you really like 85mm, whether for serious portraits, low-light journalism, or just casual artistic imagery in general, get this lens to go on your Sony E-mount body, or your Sigma/Panasonic/Leica L-mount body. You won’t regret it.

The latter issue is no longer a problem with modern highest-end mirrorless AF systems, such as on the Sony A9-series and even the crop-sensor A6600. Their AF systems, combined with the powerful stepper motor and the decently lightweight optics of the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DN, make low-light high-speed action photography a possibility, as long as 85mm is right for what you’re doing; it may very well be that you’re better off with either a 70-200mm f/2.8, or a longer lens like the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM. Landscape & Nature Photography OPTICAL CONSTRUCTION: 15 elements in 11 groups, 5 Special Low Dispersion, 1 Aspherical, Super Multi-Layer Coating You might not need f/1.4 all the time, in fact, you might spend most of your time at f/8 or f/11. However, if you’re a landscape photographer who also shoots nightscapes or any type of creative nature work with shallow depth and selective focus, then you’ll be happy to know that the Sigma 85 1.4 DN isn’t just a wide-open top-performer, it’s also truly flawless when stopped down to f/8-11. The lighter weight and more compact size also mean you might prefer it over any other 85mm prime, for its rugged durability that you can trust in inclement weather. Nightscape & Astrophotography

The Nikon mount version of this lens includes an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism. Functionality may be limited on some camera bodies. *For Nikon F mount cameras, please see Nikon camera compatibilityDistortion is virtually nonexistent thanks to the in-camera profile correction, and vignetting is surprisingly low even when that in-camera correction is turned off! Turn the in-camera vignetting correction on, of course, and overall there is very little to be noticed, even when over-processing images at f/1.4. The same goes for wedding photographers: If you’re going to be holding a camera and lens to your eye literally all day long, (yes, I have photographed many Hindu weddings that started before sunrise, and went until very late at night!) …you’ll want a decently lightweight choice, but one that doesn’t compromise on image quality or build quality, either.
