About this deal

This was resolved in Manufacturer Software 32.35.0 and all of the boxes should have upgraded to this version now. The BT DTR-2100 Youview+ box is small ,silent, and very responsive. Does everything I want it to do, plus I have now got quite a number of premium IPTV channels which provide excellent PQ. BTW you can also record the Internet channels. Do note that a broadband connection is a MUST – you can’t even setup the boxes without connecting them to the internet first. If that’s an issue for you, you might want to look at getting a Freeview Boxinstead. Note the other boxes were not affected. 4K picture quality on these boxes is unchanged too and I think everyone is very pleased with the sharpness on the 4K BT Sport programmes. The best YouView box you can get at the moment (at least without a BT subscription), with a very decent price, this is the only box that also features Ultra HD (4K) capabilities.

John you mentioned on 5th June “You can even get 8k30fps content over HDMI 2.0 with DSC.”, so you know about FRL/DSC. Do you or anybody else disagree with Pete’s info about the specifications for HDMI 2.1. One or two live matches a week will be shown in 4K on the Ultra HD Sport channel (number 434 on the EPG). Other sports lined up include MotoGP, UFC and rugby. To help satiate your desire for 2,160p material, there’s a handful of short promos in 4K designed to show off the format, located in the BT TV portal. With no compatible studio cameras, the half-time bit is done by the commentator up in the stands, which gives the game away that BT has yet to put resources in to the overall presentation. But when the actual live footage is so impressive, that hardly seems important. The bottom line is that UHD is here, and not before time. Those already signed up for BT broadband are advised to book an engineer in for an install as soon as possible. Related Articles:

I got my sister a retail Youview box last Christmas from Currys I went for the one with the 1tb that's a little dearer. If you're able to, make a note of all your preferred settings and scheduled recordings as you will lose them once you've completed a Maintenance Mode reset. We have many different YouView boxes, because they are all slightly different, we have different instructions for them. Everything is sharper than it is in HD – not just a bit sharper, much sharper. The outline of players in UHD is much clearer, the detail in the grass is better (even in wide shots), and you can actually read the wording on the ads that run round the upper tier of the Wembley stand. The Ethernet cable is securely connected to the Ethernet port. If you’re using Powerline adapters, make sure these are connected also. Need help with these connections? See our connection guide

At the time, Freeview only offered over-the-air programming using somewhat “dumb” set-top receivers – so YouView had a clear advantage. Now (TV) –Sky’s contract-free streaming service – but only on some devices (Also see our NOW review) We've investigated this thoroughly and have made some significant improvements to the HD Picture quality on the Ultra HD 4K box.Is it worth it? Yes if you’re a sports fan with an existing BT Infinity subscription. Yes even if you’re not, but desperately want to watch UHD TV right now. The EPG is a paragon of onscreen guides, so that finding and recording shows is about as easy as it gets. The PVR is highly responsive apart from taking its time to boot up (a real annoyance) and re-tune channels. Pausing is instantaneous but fast-forward and rewind aren’t the expected progressions that simply double the speed smoothly with each press. Instead, they stutter and jump like a kangaroo doing a steeplechase. Then there are boxes that come without the BT/TalkTalk branding, arriving directly from Humax and Huawei. The need for a new STB is perhaps further underlined by developments elsewhere in the market. For example, Virgin Media are preparing to launch their next generation Virgin TV 360 service, which is already in UK trials, and that looks set to arrive before Christmas ( here).

Considering how complex the content offering is, the box itself is pretty easy to get to grips with. An Ethernet Connection: The catch-up and on-demand features of YouView work via your broadband connection. The boxes, however, do not support WiFi – so you need to connect the box directly to your broadband router (or via a Powerline Adapter– see our review of the best ones) A TV Aerial –The free channels are broadcast over the air, so you need an aerial that can intercept those signals. It can either be an outdoor aerial (usually on your roof), or a cheap indoor aerial. Take a look at our guide for buying the best indoor aerials. Version 2.1 of the HDMI specification supports a new signalling system called FRL (Fixed Rate Link) to enable higher bandwidth. With lossless compression (DSC), HDMI 2.1 supports up to 120 Gb/s bandwidth for 8K/120FPS, within the 48 Gb/s specified. Ten years ago I wandered into the Tokyo equivalent of Currys and saw an HD broadcast for the first time. The clarity blew my mind and I’ve never forgotten the moment. Since then nothing that’s been broadcast has had the same impact. That all changed when the Humax DTR-T4000 turned up, the UK's first set-top box to cater for 4K TV owners, as part of the BT TV ecosystem.I have an LG tv that has Netflix app, and this flags up when content is in DolbyVision or HDR. However, if I'm watching the same content through the BT Netflix app It doesn't identify it as in these formats - just standard HD or UHD. Presumably the content direct through the TV is higher quality because the BT box doesn't have the capability for the highest level content? At the minute the T4000 is the best box BT have but we are expecting a new one out sometime in the first half of next year with wireless capability and a few other bells and whistles - see this thread for more What does BT bring to the party? Extra channels, including BT Sports 1 and 2, BT Sport Europe and BT Sport ESPN, but the main course is channel 434, where you’ll find UHD content. Truth be told, there aren’t a lot of YouView boxes out there, so making a choice is – for good and for bad – not that complicated. Still, because the boxes aren’t cheap, you should still look carefully at the different features they offer (which is what we’re here to help with.)
