About this deal

But what if there is no third player that has invested in that company? Even if the decision is to forget the third bonus when no players hold Third Majority, then the other players are still farther behind the "early jumpers" than in a traditional game of ACQUIRE. If the decision is to split the third bonus between the top majority holders, then the game has increased its long running problem of keeping the games competitive on a regular basis and attracting new players. In the traditional game of ACQUIRE, a company is safe when it attains 11 tiles. Hasbro has decided to change that number to 10 in this edition. In the traditional game of ACQUIRE, one particular price point of a companies worth during game play is the range of 6-10 tiles. Then once the company became safe the price range was 11-20 tiles. The pattern continued until the size of the company went to 41 & Over.

A player during their turn may declare the game at an end if the largest chain exceeds a specified size (about 40% of the board), or all chains on the board are too large to be acquired. When the game ends, shareholder bonuses Yes the board is plastic, but Hasbro neglected to mark the square designations with an alternate color from the board. The design of the tiles are similar to the 1999 tiles but smaller. Therefore, the board should have been done to a similar style as the 1999 edition but Hasbro made the center of the square on this 2016 edition too small and consequently the square designations are too small to read. There are plenty of games in my collection where high production values somehow elevate it’s rating in my mind- maybe I’m more shallow than I care to admit. But it isn’t often this works the other way, where poor design choices effect a game’s rating as usually, the gameplay will always come through. But in the case of Acquire, I think this is one of the exceptions where the component choices took some of the shine off my overall enjoyment, and that is a shame. Greed Is Good! Before play begins, the players must decide whether the numbers of players' shares will be public or private information. Keeping this information private can greatly extend the game since players will be less certain of their status, and therefore less willing to end the game. The markers for the hotels and corporations are "buildings." The "small buildings" (illustrated here by the red "LH" marker for the Luster Hotel) are used to designate the lower priced companies. The "medium buildings" (illustrated by the purple "WC" marker for the Watts Corporation) are used to designate the medium priced companies. The "large buildings" (illustrated by the charcoal "QC" of the Quasar Corporation) are used to designate the high priced companies. Each marker is colored to match the company it represents. In 1976, the 3M game division was sold to Avalon Hill and Acquire became part of their bookcase game series. Four years later, Avalon Hill published the computer game Computer Acquire for the PET, Apple II and TRS-80. [2] Example of Acquire game play, Wizards of the Coast edition This booklet goes a long way to helping new players learn and understand the game of ACQUIRE. It is just a shame that they didn't give this much attention to the rest of the game. Hasbro has fully illustrated and explained how to play the game of ACQUIRE in this booklet but you still can't see the board or decipher the tiles.

Dated 1976 Gray box edition with new box artwork same contents as regular 1976 editions (This edition was also produced in 1992) Acquire, the classic 1960s board game considered by many as one of the best alternatives to Monopoly, will see a new edition later this year. He corresponded with professional game designers as well as amateurs who developed ideas for games and asked him for advice and critiques. Annual visits to the Toy Fair in New York City were opportunities to meet colleagues and to acquire more games and reference materials for his huge collections. Hasbro decided to reconfigure the range as 6-7 tiles, then 8-17, 18-27, 28-37, & 38 & Over, which makes the processing of information and flow of the overall game more cumbersome. This reconfiguration doesn't even allow for a price increase when a company becomes safe. This is one of those areas where I feel like design decisions are being made by people who have never played the game of ACQUIRE.Acquire is one of those few old games that has aged far more gracefully than the finest of wines. I can easily point out that this game is easier to teach than Monopoly while still preserving a competitive edge that remains sharp to this day. The game’s inclusion in the 2023 event of the World Series of Board Gaming, the pinnacle of competitive board gaming, is a testament to its enduring appeal and strategic depth. Mastering the Deal Dated 1976 plastic tiles, yellow hard plastic board, redesigned money, no inner box (This edition was also produced in 1977, 79, 81, 82, & 86)

Guests will be allowed to participate in all Side Events (Open Gaming, Game Library, Exhibitor Hall, Ceremonies, etc.) Guests are NOT permitted to participate in any of the 16 Ring Games, or ORG Games (Outer Ring Games). In Acquire, 2-6 players compete as property speculators/ entrepreneurs looking to invest in seven Hotel companies, hoping to gain controlling shares where possible and reap the benefits of their ruthless investment. Shelley, Bruce C. (2007). "Acquire". In Lowder, James (ed.). Hobby Games: The 100 Best. Green Ronin Publishing. pp.1–4. ISBN 978-1-932442-96-0. I’ll start with the easiest criticism: player scaling. Acquire technically works at the five or six player count, but a myriad of issues fester all over the experience. Downtime becomes far more significant and can lead to the game hitting the two-hour mark. I love Acquire, but this isn’t a two-hour experience. Players must manage their investments carefully; put too much into one company and you may find yourself bled dry when an opponent takes control and proceeds to merge that company with another one they have a majority stake in. There are other hazards to negotiate throughout the course of play such as hostile takeovers and price manipulation by other players but ultimately it’s all about balancing risk and reward while attempting to outperform your opponentsNow, you can play without screens; the money and shares are single-sided so can be kept on the table upside down to effectively hide them from other players, but to be honest this just looks rubbish. Overall it feels shoddy and in a game with very few premium pieces to ramp up production costs, it’s not acceptable to leave out components which make the game work as it’s meant to be played.
