In addition to its compact size, taking up 296 x 250mm of your worktop space (without the jug attached), the Avance HR1922 looks pleasantly futuristic. The juicer’s shape is reminiscent of a large curvy bottle, further helped by the fact that most of its removable juicing parts are made of transparent plastic. Two buttons sit at the top of the machine: one for turning the juicer on and off, the other for the reverse function, which needs to be held down should any fruit or veg become lodged during the juicing process. It may seem a little obvious, but a slow juicer is exactly what its name suggests. It is a special form of juice press which slowly cuts fruit and veg into small pieces and squeezes all of the juice from them. The Philips slow juicers not only squeeze the fruit but also extract juice from the fruit pulp. A bunch of grapes was juiced efficiently – another benefit of a slow juicer over its centrifugal counterparts, which tend to throw lighter bits of fruit around without necessarily squeezing the most out of them. We sieved each juice to measure how smooth it was, and timed how fast we could make juice with each machine.

Storage is fantastic, the electrical wire wraps nicely and neatly into a channel in the base of the juice, effectively hiding it and all the containers fit neatly into each other, meaning no stray pieces to also find homes for when storing. Vegetables were another surprise, I especially was fearful of the performance with something like a carrot, but it was no where near a problem. Firm vegetables producced wonderful "clean" juices, virtually no material other than juice. I find myself creating more vegetables drinks with this machine than I had with any of my previous machines. We ranked juicers on how noisy they were. While all juicers will make some noise, the best ones were much quieter than others. The Philips Avance HR1922 isn’t cheap, but it has several clever touches that make it stand out from the competition. If you care about appearance and storage, or easy cleaning, you’d be hard-pushed to find anything better.
