About this deal

The endearing characteristics that highlight a classic Vintage Port pairing involve buttery and tangy elements, ok… and probably the crazy stink of Stilton blue cheese. Complex and concentrated, Tawny Ports aren’t nearly as fresh and fruity as their Ruby Port cousins (after all, they’ve had to age a minimum of seven years in oak). It's produced from top quality wines made from Graham’s four quintas (estates) in the Douro Valley, packed with rich dried fruit, citrus, and nuttiness. Vintage Port is best drunk old (15–30 years of age), however, young Vintage Port (up to 5 years of age) can also deliver an excellent drinking experience.

However, it is just as often dressed up with equal parts Port to tonic and garnished with a slice of lemon. Approximately three out of every ten years will rank as an officially designated “vintage” Port year, which occurs only when the harvest conditions are truly exceptional. In years that aren't quite good enough for vintage port, producers will release a wine under a second label. Then, while there is still lots of unfermented sugar, brandy is added which kills the yeasts and stops fermentation.Flavor: This wine has a nutty, caramelized character that often delivers buttered toffee and smoky vanilla themes in tandem with blackberry, ripe cherry, and crème brûlée alongside dried orange, sweet figs, and mocha notes with some age-designated bottles carrying the unmistakable aromas of spiced candied pecans or sticky toffee pudding (a classic English dish). The wines then spend some time in wood, with the lowest quality sold ready to drink as ruby port and the best, only made in special years, bottled as vintage port. You can get all kinds, including white port (made from white grapes), each with different characteristics. Made from a blend of two or three vintages, the idea is you get the best of all the harvests, and this one is both creamy and smooth and pairs well with puddings, especially berries and chocolate, or with strong cheeses. It smells like muscovado sugar wrapped in orange peel, on the palate more oranges and tangerines with nutty notes on the finish.

Crusted Port – A blend of outstanding young ports from two or three harvests, these are left to mature in the bottle, forming a “crust” (natural sediment) as they age. You’ll know the name of Graham’s – they’ve been making port since 1820 – but you might not know much about white port, which is made exclusively from white grapes and is actually nearer a golden colour. Think pecan pie, almond biscotti, or regionally-inspired Portuguese salted almond cake, or caramel covered cheesecake. Then, partner up with fresh fruit themes: angel cake with strawberries, lemon meringue, peaches in cream, or white chocolate covered strawberries. Tawny Port – After being aged in oak barrels, tawny ports are further aged in bottles for periods such as ten, 20, 40 years, etc. Serving Tips: Most Tawny Ports have an age designation on the label: 10, 20, 30 or more years, which indicates the average year of the grapes in the bottle, not the vintage age of the fruit harvest.
