Acidifying compost can be accomplished in a few different ways. First, adding organic material such as pine needles, sawdust, peat moss, and shredded leaves to the compost bin will help lower the pH level of the compost as organic materials generally have an acidic quality.

Azaleas have shallow roots and require well-drained soil. If your garden is poorly drained, consider planting azaleas in containers or a raised bed. They thrive in low pH, or more acidic, conditions. If you have high pH, or more alkaline soil, you’ll need to amend your growing area. Aluminum sulfate, sulfur, coffee grounds, and pine needles are good for this. Peat moss used to be recommended, but due to environmental concerns it is no longer a good option.

Spring layered plants can be transplanted into the garden in the fall of the same year. But with either spring- or fall-layered plants, waiting a year or two before transplanting is better. Softwood cuttings: Commercial propagation is by means of softwood cuttings taken in early spring and rooted under mist propagation. Cuttings needa good level of warmth at the base toroot successfully. The amateur gardener is more likely to be successful if using a small electric propagator with bottom heat. Using Azalea fertilizer on certain types of Hydrangeas could affect their bloom color, which may or may not be what you want. Azalea fertilizer will tend to lower pH, which yields blue Hydrangea blossoms, whereas higher pH soil gives you pink blooms. Leaf drop can often be a sign of water shortage, especially on indoor-grown plants or those in containers. Granular mineral fertilizer can clump if moisture has gotten into it. There’s nothing wrong with it, but if clumping prevents you from measuring it correctly, you should get new fertilizer. The problem is not that there’s anything wrong with the fertilizer, but that you need to be able to measure a healthy amount for your plants.

If you are looking for a more immediate method, you could use an iron-based acidifying fertilizer. These fertilizers usually come in a granular form and will help to increase the pH of the soil immediately but can also cause other negative side effects such as stunting the growth of some plants. It will take at least 6 weeks for the compost to be ready. You will know it’s time to put it to use when it’s the texture of fine soil. How does composting work?
