About this deal

In addition, I would have liked to see stronger lume, better finishing, and solid endlinks on the bracelet.

Regardless, while the “sweetened” dimensions are a problem for a ton of people, it isn’t a big deal for me, simply because I don’t take issue with the 1953 being a generalized tribute to the original 37mm 6204, instead of it painstakingly attempting to get every single detail of a vintage Sub down to a T (and no, I don’t mean tritium). It’s a reliable, relatively accurate, and endlessly serviceable movement that’s found in literally thousands of different watches of all kinds, from slim dress watches to Aragon’s meaty divers and everything in between. It’s a watch that shows Invicta is capable of pulling off restrained designs, and I hope to see more like it in the future. As a side note, I swapped out the bracelet on mine with the one from my Pro Diver which I think is more comfortable.

Invicta 1953: Smarter by the Second? (Review) | WatchCrunch

Despite how popular it is to roast Invicta, the 1953 isn’t resistant to “waterproog” and hasn’t been around since the days of Göbekli Tepe, or is an artifact from 6,477 years from today. Those end links are nice and flexible too, as the central segment is recessed, allowing for a greater range of motion. The Pro Diver, like its modernized, gaudily engraved brother, comes with 200 meters of water resistance along with a screw-down caseback and crown. While Stuhrling had a similarly extravagant box for its low MSRP, Invicta impressively pulls its weight with the watch’s quality, as you’ll read below. It's not supposed to be a BB is it, it's supposed to be a homage to the very first Rolex sub dating from 1953. Not only does it have plenty of grippy serrations but is perfectly responsive and a pleasure to use during time adjustments and winding.

Invicta Pro Diver 1953 Review - Invicta’s Best Watch Is

As a standalone watch in no context, it’s fine, but it doesn’t quite work as a vintage-looking homage to that iconic Submariner. Usually a cost-cutting measure, it is the result of using a date complication movement on a watch with no date window. The bezel insert features a lume pip at the 0 position and numerals in a font faithful to the original Rolex. While I’m not too keen on the slimness of the bezel, it is still a significant upgrade over the other Pro Divers I’ve covered. But Invicta also famously gives all their NH35s a custom yellow rotor, a sight I now wish I’d seen way earlier in my watch-collecting career.Back when cars were all steel, smoking was good for you and people thought Elvis was Satan's strongest soldier. Even though the watchmaker has a nearly 200-year history, most people associate the brand with their themed Bolt Zeuses and Lupahs. The bezel also appears narrower, which I don’t think looks proportionally quite as good as the Rolex. I can’t help looking at that Rolex and thinking that this Invicta could have been so much more if they had just followed through with this homage, rather than stepping off the gas two-thirds of the way into the design phase. With the gilt minute track, hand and dial script I thought gilt numerals on the bezel would work slightly better, perhaps, and then a flash of red round the bezel pip could look funky.
